**WARNING, DISTURBING THE IMAGES**
~
Did you know that blacktail deer can squeeze through surprisingly small gaps, with some reports documenting openings as narrow as 12 inches. Adult deer are capable of slightly compressing their bodies (something they do as fawns to hide from predators in grass) and will lay their heads back to slip through gaps in fencing.
While they sometimes can successfully squeeze through, deer often get stuck halfway which usually leads to severe or fatal injuries.
~
The Urban Trapping team was called out to a Carmel property to assist in the removal of a deceased deer; a young buck had gotten stuck in the backyard fence.
He had tried squeezing between the fence post and utility pole; he made it halfway through but got stuck at its pelvic area.
Ultimately we lifted the carcass up and squeezed his body back through the fence. Once the carcass was removed we performed a sanitation and deodorization service.

Did you know that Chinese geese were domesticated from wild swan geese of Central Siberia over 2,000 years ago.
Chinese geese and their descendants (wild swan geese) are true geese, but they both have long, graceful necks, and an upright posture like that of a swan.
~
Urban Trapping Wildlife Control was contacted about a pair of Chinese geese that had been dumped and abandoned on a property in Carmel Valley.
The property manager wanted the geese caught and removed; our plan was simple; safely and humanely catch and bring them to a home that would appreciate and care for them.
Over the span of two weeks and multiple attempts both geese were finally caught. A family farm in Southern Monterey County agreed to home and care for the pair. The geese now live with ducks, chickens, turkeys, goats, and many other animals; and most importantly they have a family of humans that actually care about them.

Did you know that these highly invasive non-native animals are responsible for an estimated $2.5 billion worth of damage in the U.S. each year. Here in Monterey County most of the damage occurs to our agriculture fields and crops.
Wild pigs are also susceptible to at least 30 transmittable livestock diseases and can host over 35 types of parasites; Of those 30 diseases, 20 can be transferred to humans.
~
Urban Trapping Wildlife Control has been trapping and removing feral pigs from where it all started in California.
This property is located in the heart of the old ranch where feral pigs were released over 100 years ago. These pigs are direct descendants from the dozen or so “Russian Boars” that were imported in the early 1900s.
We’re licensed by the state of California through the Department of Fish and Wildlife to work with native and non native nuisance wildlife.
If you want to know more about what we do, please feel free to reach out to us or check us out online!

How are Northern Pacific Rattlesnake Bites Treated?
All snake bites should be considered as medical emergencies and evaluated by trained medical professionals, as soon as possible; the first 6-8 hours are particularly vital for preventing life-threatening issues.
Failure to obtain early assessment and management from the highest level of care (available within the community) may potentially result in severe complications and even death.
~
We were contacted by a property in the Las Palmas area that had an unwanted visitor in their backyard.
Our client was out doing some gardening when she noticed the head of a snake poking out from behind one of her planter boxes.
Once at the property we located the (Western) Northern Pacific Rattlesnakes hiding in the landscaping nearby.
We were able to safely catch the serpent and move it to a more isolated location away from the home.

**WARNING, GRAPHIC IMAGES**
~
Did you know a healthy adult blacktail deer can actually jump a 76 inch fence with ease? Though they generally do so only when chased or forced. Some adult deer can even jump over taller fences at 96 to 120 inches in height.
~
The Urban Trapping team was called out to a Pacific Grove property to assist in the removal of a deceased deer; a doe had gotten her head stuck in a backyard gate.
We inspected the carcass and found she had broken her neck in the struggle to escape; she also had been scavenged on by a smaller animal like a skunk or opossum.
Ultimately we lifted the carcass up and squeezed her head back through the gate. Once the carcass was removed we performed a sanitation and deodorization service.

This property is located near the old ranch where feral pigs were released over 100 years ago. These pigs are direct descendants from the dozen or so “Russian Boars” that were imported in the early 1900s.
Due to the sanitation issues and property damage caused by these wild pigs, UTWC was issued a permit by the Department of Fish & Wildlife. This permit allows us to help with the large feral pig issue on this property.
Before we jump to a depredation permit we always try deterrent services, hazing, and reinforcing the fencing around the property; if that all fails we will move forward with trapping.
If anyone has any questions about our wild pig services, depredation permits, or anything else involving feral pigs, please don’t hesitate to give us a call.

We appreciate The Carmel Pine Cone and Chris Counts for reaching out to us and shedding some light on the recent mountain lion incidents that have occurred in our community.
~
Recently there’s been a string of incidents in the Carmel Valley and Highway 68 area involving a mountain lion(s) attacking and killing family pets as well as livestock.
Around the same time, we picked up a large deceased male mountain lion in the same area as the incidents.
Unfortunately the attacks continued even after this particular mountain lion had been killed by a car.

Did you know a sounder is what a group of wild swine/feral pigs are called? A study in the Central Coast region of California found that the average sounder sizes were between 9 and 6 pigs depending on the study year. Though we have seen sounders as small as three pigs and some with more than fifty.
~
These are some of the first pigs caught of 2026. We temporarily have these smaller box traps set while we get the larger corral trap ready to be moved.
This particular property is located near the old ranch where Eurasian wild boars were released over 100 years ago. These pigs are direct descendants from the dozen or so pigs that were imported in the early 1900s.

*
Did you know that California’s mountain lion population is estimated to be between 4,000 and 6,000 currently?
If this estimate is accurate, that would make California one of the highest cougar populated states in the nation. With a population like that, it’s no surprise the leading cause of death for California mountain lions is human-caused mortality through vehicle collisions.
~
In the late hours of Tuesday night we received a call of a large mountain lion that had been hit by a car.
We decided to go out to confirm it was a mountain lion and that it was deceased. We contacted the local biologist as well as CADFW dispatch to report the lion so it could be picked up and taken in for a necropsy. Unfortunately no one was available that night so after talking with dispatch again it was agreed that we’d load the big cat up and transport it to the field office in the morning.
This cougar was a very large male specimen; more than capable of taking down any prey it desired. It was estimated to be around 6 years of age per DFW. The biologist performed a necropsy and checked the stomach contents for any unnatural meals (domestic animals); the stomach was empty at the time of death.

*
Did you know mange is a contagious skin disease in mammals caused by parasitic mites that burrow into the skin, leading to intense itching, hair loss, crusting, redness, and secondary infections, sometimes resulting in death.
The two common types of mange are sarcoptic (highly contagious, causes scabies in humans) and demodectic mange (localized bald patches, less contagious) requiring vet diagnosis and treatment with drugs.
~
The Urban Trapping team was called out to a Carmel property to assist in the removal of a deceased bobcat. We inspected the carcass to try and determine a cause of death. We discovered the animal was emaciated and showed signs of mange.
The bobcat carcass was removed from the property and a sanitation and deodorization service was performed. DFW requested the carcass to see if rodenticides were present in the animals system. Rodenticides, especially anticoagulant types, don’t directly cause mange (a mite infestation) but severely weaken wildlife’s immune systems, making them highly vulnerable to it, turning a manageable issue into a deadly disease leading to hair loss, starvation, infection, and death.
