Sand Through Our Fingers — The Consuming Fire
Have you ever stopped to think about how much of your life you’ve already forgotten?
Last night, as I lay in bed, I began thinking about all the years Jodi and I have shared. The places we’ve been, the hands we’ve held, the laughter, the tears, the prayers, and the countless little moments that make up a marriage.
Thousands upon thousands of memories.
Yet when I tried to recall them, I could retrieve so few.
Not because they weren’t precious. But because our memories simply cannot hold everything we’ve lived.
Life is a little like holding sand in our hands.
We try to hold on to every grain, but time keeps slipping through our fingers.
And it reminded me of something far greater.
What slips from our memory has never slipped beyond God’s knowledge.
A kiss doesn’t lose its meaning because we’ve forgotten it. An act of kindness doesn’t become worthless because nobody remembers it. And love doesn’t cease to matter because no photograph captured it.
David wrote:
“How precious also are thy thoughts unto me, O God! how great is the sum of them! If I should count them, they are more in number than the sand: when I awake, I am still with thee.” — Psalm 139:17–18 (KJV)
That thought has stayed with me.
Here we are trying to hold on to a few grains of yesterday, while the God who created every shore holds us in His hands.
And perhaps that’s part of what I’ve been learning through marriage, family, faith, and even running a small business.
Life isn’t simply about what we accomplish or accumulate. It’s about how we love, how we serve, and what we leave behind in the lives of others.
That’s the heart behind Agape Window Services.
Not just clean windows, roofs, and gutters, but treating people and their homes with care, integrity, and genuine love.
Because long after the work is finished, how we treated one another still matters.
“For our God is a consuming fire.” — Hebrews 12:29
May His fire consume what doesn’t belong in us and leave behind what is good, pure, and eternal.
We don’t need to hold every grain of sand when the One who created the shores holds us.
And perhaps that’s worth remembering today.
What’s one little moment in your life that you wish you could go back and experience just one more time?
