Spotted lanternflies (SLF) can cause problems for plants, trees, and outdoor recreation:
Plants
SLF feed on the sap of over 70 plant species, including grapevines, maples, black walnut, birch, and willow. Their feeding can stress plants, making them more vulnerable to disease and other insects, and can potentially kill them. SLF also leave behind a sticky substance called honeydew, which can attract other insects and promote the growth of sooty molds that harm plant photosynthesis and fruit yield.
Trees
SLF can impact forest health, and while they haven't killed any trees in the U.S. yet, their continued spread is a concern for foresters and arborists. Many of the trees SLF feed on are commercially important as ornamental or timber trees.
Outdoor recreation
SLF can negatively impact outdoor recreation by attracting swarms of insects that can hinder activities.
