Today is , a day that commemorates the emancipation of enslaved African Americans in the United States. On June 19, 1865, Union soldiers arrived in Galveston, Texas, and announced that the Civil War was over and slavery was abolished. This was more than two years after President Lincoln issued the Emancipation Proclamation. Since then, Juneteenth has been celebrated as a day of freedom, joy and resilience by the Black community and its allies.
As we celebrate this historic day, let us also remember the ongoing struggle for racial justice and equality in our country. Let us honor the lives and legacies of those who fought for freedom and dignity, and those who continue to do so today. Let us educate ourselves and others about the history and culture of Black Americans, and support their voices and visions for a better future. Let us stand in solidarity with one another and demand accountability and reform from our institutions and leaders. Let us be part of the change we want to see in the world.
Happy Juneteenth, everyone! ๐ค
