Winter Plumbing Prep Checklist
Protect Your Pipes. Prevent Costly Repairs. Stay Warm All Winter.
Use this checklist to help winter-proof your home’s plumbing before freezing temperatures hit.
✅ Pipes & Fixtures
☐ Insulate exposed pipes in basements, crawl spaces, garages, and exterior walls
☐ Disconnect and drain outdoor hoses
☐ Shut off and drain exterior water lines (if applicable)
☐ Check for slow leaks or drips—small issues get worse in winter
✅ Water Heater
☐ Flush sediment buildup (recommended annually)
☐ Set water heater to a safe, efficient temperature
☐ Make sure the area around the heater is clear and accessible
✅ Drains & Sewer
☐ Clear slow or partially clogged drains
☐ Avoid pouring grease or fats down the drain
☐ Schedule a sewer line inspection if you’ve had backups before
☐ Know where your main sewer cleanout is located
✅ Cold Weather Readiness
☐ Keep indoor temperatures above 55°F, even when away
☐ Open cabinet doors under sinks to allow warm air circulation
☐ Know where your main water shut-off valve is
☐ Test your sump pump before heavy rain or snow melt
✅ When to Call a Plumber
☐ Frozen or burst pipes
☐ No hot water or inconsistent water temperature
☐ Gurgling drains or sewer odors
☐ Low water pressure or unexplained water bills
