The metal support rod inside a granite countertop starts to rust and expand, causing the granite above it to lift, crack, or separate. The rod was originally installed in a groove under the slab for strength, but when moisture gets to it, it can corrode. As it rusts, it swells and creates upward pressure, which cracks the granite.

Common signs of the metal support rod causing damage.

A raised line or hump in the granite

Cracks forming above the rod location

Seams separating or becoming uneven

Rust-colored staining or dark shadowing in the stone

It’s a hidden issue that can cause major damage if it isn’t corrected the right way.
