I’m Daniel, owner of Knox Window Cleaning based in Manitowish Waters. I started this business last year because I couldn’t get a window cleaner to come wash my own windows. After all this work, we’ve noticed the same issues coming up again and again. Many of them are preventable, so I wanted to share a few simple tips that can help protect your home and save money in the long run.
1. Hard water spots can permanently damage windows.
Hard water spots usually come from sprinklers, hose water, or water left behind after house washing. If your home is being washed before staining, painting, or simply to restore its appearance, make sure the windows are properly scrubbed and squeegeed before the water dries. The same goes for “spray-on” window cleaners. If they are left to dry on the glass, they can leave spots behind.
2. Moss on your roof is more than a cosmetic issue.
Moss acts like a wet sponge. It traps moisture against your roof, which can damage shingles and shorten the life of the roof. In one extreme case, we worked on a home where a shaded roof had so much moss that it had lifted shingles and caused the decking and trusses underneath to become soft. The roof was only 9 years into an expected 25-year lifespan. We treated the moss, and the roof dried out, but the damage was already noticeable.
3. Black streaks on your roof are not just dirt.
Those streaks are typically caused by cyanobacteria/algae growth. On asphalt shingles, this growth can feed on the limestone filler, loosen protective granules, and reduce the lifespan of the roof.
4. Dirty window frames can lead to bigger problems.
Cobwebs, dirt, and debris around window frames, tracks, and sills can trap moisture. Over time, that moisture can contribute to rotting frames, broken thermopane seals, and permanently cloudy windows.
5. A clogged dryer vent is worth taking seriously.
If your dryer is taking longer than normal to dry clothes, and the exhaust vent has not been cleaned in over a year, lint buildup may be restricting airflow. Besides making your dryer work harder, this is a well-documented fire hazard. How often it needs cleaning depends on dryer use, vent length, where it exhausts, and how many bends are in the pipe.

One of the simplest ways to extend the life of your windows, roof, siding, and other parts of your home is to remove anything that traps moisture. That might mean trimming plants away from the house, cutting back branches that shade the roof, cleaning window frames, tracks, and sills, treating moss and black streaks, checking for a v***r barrier under the home if there is no basement.
