From a backyard idea to the pages of In Business Madison. 📰

Huge thanks to , writer Brittney Kenaston, and photographer Sharon Vanorny for telling our story — and to the clients and community who got us here.

The feature covers our work cleaning the Wisconsin State Capitol's solar array, plus a client who saw a ~30% production boost after their clean. That's the kind of buildup standing between your system and the power it was built to deliver.

They've had these panels for 6 years and they've never been cleaned. I had to rub my hands pretty hard to make a "clean" surface. That's what "invisible" grime looks like.

The smoke isn't just hazing up the sky — it's cutting your solar output.

Wisconsin has been under an air quality advisory this week as wildfire smoke from Minnesota and Ontario drifts across the state, pushing conditions into the unhealthy-to-hazardous range in many counties. Beyond the health impacts, that smoke is hitting your solar production too — and it leaves something behind after it clears.

What the smoke does while it's here:

Research from the National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL) shows that wildfire smoke scatters and absorbs sunlight before it reaches the ground — a process called atmospheric attenuation. On heavy smoke days, this can cut daily solar output by 10–30%, with dense, low-hanging plumes pushing losses even higher.

What it leaves behind after it's gone:

As the smoke settles, fine soot and ash particles land directly on panel glass. That residue doesn't rinse off with the next light rain — dew and heat cycles bake it onto the surface, forming a film that keeps blocking sunlight long after the sky clears. This buildup is called soiling, and it's one of the most common — and most preventable — causes of lost solar production.

Why now is the time:

Once the smoke clears, checking panels for soot and ash residue should be on every solar owner's list. A quick inspection and cleaning now can recover output that would otherwise sit lost for months.

Solar Alchemist uses a 100% deionized water cleaning method with a soft rotary brush — no chemicals, fully warranty-safe — to get panels back to full production. Serving homes and businesses across Southern Wisconsin and Northern Illinois.

Learning about roof pitches has been interesting. This just reinforces the need for a safety harness. While I was able to knock out the first two rows from the roof, I had to go down to the ground and finish the bottom. Glad I got this done and thankful for the continued learning!

☀️ The Grime You Can't See is Costing You Power! ☀️

Ever looked up at your solar panels at noon and thought they looked pristine? They might be hiding a dirty secret.

These photos, taken around 8:30 AM, reveal exactly what's lurking on your array when the morning dew is at its peak. Look closely at the "Before" photo: that moisture has mixed with accumulated atmospheric dust, pollen, and grime, creating distinct, muddy vertical tracks. Once that dew evaporates under the afternoon sun, that residue will harden into an invisible, light-blocking crust.

This "hidden dirt" acts like a microscopic blanket, directly blocking sunlight and preventing your panels from reaching their peak efficiency. If you don't clean them, you are leaving money on the table.

This customer was me last year.

I saw how dirty my panels were and after a QUICK Google search I got a pressure washer and some dawn soap and "cleaned" my panels.
It wasn't until I did a little more research that I realized those two things are EXACTLY what you aren't supposed to do. But with no guidence and the belief that rain will clean it I figured that was the best thing. They were dirty.

Solar Alchemist was created a few weeks later . For people just like us! We clean them the way the manufacturer recommends. No pressure washer, regular soap and no squeegy.

We use:
Soft bristled Brush
Bio-degradable soap (Solar Panel approved)
Dionized water
A little elbow grease

P.s. Never done windows before but this brush is incredible! You can see the dirt being lifted from the glass!!

Let us help refresh your panels! Whether residential or commerical
