Cleaning and inspection today of an oil flue
Wanted to help educate some of the service people out there.

1. Putting sheet metal directly on top of sheetrock is not “ fireproofing” the wall.
Sheetrock is combustible……..
( so are wood cabinets that i see so many covered in sheet metal to “ fireproof them”)

2. Without a minimum of 1” airspace between that sheet metal and drywall, the chance of fire occuring from heat transfer from liner and connector pipe actually ACCELERATES !

Note to anyone working on or around a chimney or heating vent whether your hvac, plumber, framer etc
Open the IRC, NFPA 211, and relative owners/installation manuals….. clearances must be maintained

looks like “ handyman jack from down the road” did work here.

Annual chimney cleaning and inspection isnt just about soot/removal…….Carbon monoxide leaks can occur with coal, wood, pellet, oil or gas hearth/heating appliances.
Proper venting installation, maintenance and yearly inspection is a key to safety!

IN ANY PROFESSION, ONE NEEDS THE PROPER TOOLS/EQUIPMENT FOR THE JOB...
Today I saw a " well established chimney company " using a shop-vac to sweep an oil flue---oil soot is 10x finer than drywall dust....
Professional sweeps use expensive chimney vacuums that are specifically designed for use with oil soot and creosote......and these guys were literally in and out in less than 15 min!!!!!
( i was in the home sweeping customers wood insert and saw this!)
DO NOT LET AN HVAC/CHIMNEY GUY USE A SHOP VAC WHEN SWEEPIMG YOUR OIL FLUE!!!!!!
( i gained another customer for oil flue service for next year!)
