he Hidden Reason Your Pool Keeps Using So Much Chlorine
Most pool owners blame the Las Vegas heat when their chlorine seems to disappear, but there may be another culprit:
The swimmers.
Every time someone jumps in the pool, they bring along:
☀️ Sunscreen
💧 Body oils
😅 Sweat
🧴 Lotion
💄 Makeup
💇 Hair products
All of these end up in your pool water.
Your chlorine has two jobs: sanitize the water and break down contaminants. The more sunscreen, sweat, and body oils in the pool, the harder your chlorine has to work. That often means adding more chlorine just to keep up.
Some common signs of excessive swimmer contamination include:
✔️ Cloudy water
✔️ Increased chlorine usage
✔️ Strong chlorine odors
✔️ Waterline buildup around the tile
✔️ Algae appearing even though chemicals are being added
That greasy ring around your tile isn't usually dirt. It's often a mixture of body oils, sunscreen, dust, and other contaminants that have accumulated over time.
A few simple habits can help:
• Rinse off before swimming
• Apply sunscreen 20–30 minutes before entering the pool
• Keep filters cleaned regularly
• Address cloudy water before it turns into a larger issue
Living in Las Vegas means long swim seasons and lots of sunshine, which also means our pools work harder than pools in many other parts of the country.
If your pool seems to be using more chlorine than normal or you're battling recurring water quality issues, body oils and sunscreen may be a bigger factor than you think.
