HURRICANE PREP
Before
Anyone in the path of a hurricane should prepare their homes, families, and friends before worrying about the pool. DO NOT DRAIN YOUR POOL (you will not alleviate any type of flooding), if you do drain your pool you run the risk of the pool shifting, rolling, or popping out of the ground due to the ground being heavily saturated. Please use sandbags or barriers around any entry ways that you feel may allow water into the house. Do not throw your furniture in the pool (you will ruin your furniture or stain the pool) instead tie it down or put in inside, disable your equipment via the circuit breaker (this is a precaution against power surges to prevent equipment failures). Hopefully your Chemistry is properly maintained. If so add more than your normal weekly shock treatment as well as adding a floater if you don't have one with a few tablets. Good luck and stay safe.
AFTER
After the storm has passed please begin to bring your pool back into normal condition. Try to net out all the big stuff that may have gotten into your pool. Right after the storm check your chlorine by reaching as far as you can into the pool water. More than your normal 18 inches for a water sample. If there is power drain your pool to the normal level before adding more chlorine if the chlorine is low. If chlorine is normal or high please allow the pool to operate as normal for 2 or 3 days before trying to completely balance your water (I'm sure there's plenty to do around the yard/house/or your families) Allow the fresh water to mix otherwise you'll have inaccurate testing. If you have power please turn your circuit breakers back on, reset your time clocks to the current time. Vacuum small stuff out of the pool. I hope everyone is safe and prepared!
