🌱 Jacksonville homeowners — check your St. Augustine lawns

I’ve been seeing more lawns starting to show signs of Grey Leaf Spot fungus lately.

A lot of people think their grass is just struggling from the heat, but with our humidity and afternoon storms, fungus can become a bigger issue.

Things to look for:
• Small brown or gray spots on the grass blades
• Yellowing patches
• Areas that seem to thin out or stop filling in
• Damage that keeps spreading even with regular watering

A few things that can help:
✔ Water in the early morning instead of at night
✔ Don’t overwater areas that stay wet
✔ Keep your mower blades sharp
✔ Make sure your irrigation is covering evenly

💧 Think your irrigation system is working properly? You might be surprised.

One of the most expensive lawn problems I see isn't caused by insects or disease—it's a sprinkler system that isn't doing its job.

Here are a few warning signs:

✅ One area of your lawn is always greener than the rest
✅ Brown spots that don't improve, no matter how much you water
✅ Water running down the street after your system shuts off
✅ Mushrooms or soggy spots in the yard
✅ A higher-than-normal water bill

Many homeowners assume they need fertilizer or fungicide, when the real issue is a broken sprinkler head, leaking pipe, or malfunctioning valve.

A simple irrigation inspection can often catch these problems before they lead to dead grass or costly repairs.

If your St. Augustine lawn has brown patches—especially under trees—don't assume it just needs more water.

Over the last couple of weeks, one of the biggest trends I've noticed is fungus and sod webworms, especially in lawns with heavy shade or areas that stay damp longer after rain.

🦠 Fungus thrives where moisture lingers. Under trees, there's less sunlight and airflow, so the grass stays wet longer, creating ideal conditions for disease.

🐛 Sod Webworms are also becoming more active. These small caterpillars feed on grass blades, often at night, and can make a lawn look like it's been scalped or mowed too short. If you notice birds constantly pecking at the same area, they're often feeding on the webworms.

The challenge is that both problems can create similar-looking brown patches, but the treatments are completely different. Applying the wrong product usually wastes time and money while the damage continues.

Sedge vs. Dollarw**d – They're NOT the Same!

If you've noticed w**ds popping up in your lawn, identifying them correctly is the first step to getting rid of them.

Sedge (Nutsedge)
Grows faster than your grass
Bright green in color
Has a triangular stem ("sedges have edges")
Thrives in wet or poorly drained areas

Treatment: Sedge requires a specialty herbicide designed specifically for nutsedge. Most general w**d killers won't provide effective control.

Dollarw**d
Round, lily pad-shaped leaves
Often appears in overwatered or poorly drained lawns
Can spread quickly if left untreated

Treatment: Dollarw**d responds well to selective broadleaf herbicides, but improving drainage and reducing excessive watering are also important for long-term control.

💡 Pro Tip: The best w**d control starts before w**ds become a problem. A healthy, properly maintained lawn naturally crowds out many unwanted w**ds.
