Last week, our tillage crew, trying to take advantage of the continued dry weather, ran 24/7. Fall tillage is preferable to spring tillage because there is less potential for soil compaction and the soil temperature is ideal. Getting it done in the fall as opposed to spring gets us started on the right foot in the 2023 crop season.

Very Smart Farming!!!

A wet morning is a good time to stay in the office and get caught up on soil sampling packaging. In the fall, we sample our fields on a 2.5 acre grid to get a clear picture of the nutrient status of each field. It is an important part of our program.

“Why do you skip a row in your cotton fields” is a question we are often asked. Our cotton is planted in a skip-row pattern for two main reasons. First, it allows for standardization of equipment on 30” rows across all commodities. Second, it provides more airflow between plants, which helps to prevent boll rot in a wet fall.
