Some days your stress bucket is overflowing 🤪... other days you have some space. When mine is full I know I'm not the parent I want to be.
What gives you relief? 😌
This is a twist on the for parents & caregivers.
The stress bucket is an easy way to think about our ability to cope with the build-up of stress in our lives.
Imagine you have a bucket you carry with you. Different kinds of stress add drips and drops (from regular stressors) or gushes (from triggers / trauma) of water to it. We all have to find ways to cope (by letting some water out).
Some ways of coping are healthy. Others might offer relief in the moment but eventually add back to the stress bucket. (Hmm... wonder what those are 🤔) This post shows some positive stress relievers 💦.
The size of the bucket varies from person to person, depending on individual (eg your own circumstances, life experience, and constitution) and broader factors (like the culture and systems you live in) - and it can change from day to day. Have you ever noticed how some days a little mess can overwhelm you, but on other days you feel strong enough to stay centered in the storm? When your bucket has some extra space, everything feels a little easier.
💦 Take moments to check in. How full is your stress bucket? What gives you relief? 😌
The stress bucket metaphor came from an idea by Brabban and Turkington (2002). This image was inspired by a post from of the trauma-informed stress bucket.
