Why We Leave the Stems:

Leaving pithy flower stalks and soft, spongy wood in your yard creates vital nesting sites for stem-nesting bees. The soft tissue at the center of these stalks provides an ideal environment for bees to nest, and hollow stems also work well.

Native plants that provide this type of habitat include:

Swamp milkw**d (Asclepias incarnata)
Joe Pye w**d (Eutrochium purpureum)
Purple coneflower (Echinacea purpurea)
Blazing star (Liatris sp.)
