I was just sitting here thinking about the fall season. Specifically fall clean-ups. Even more specifically, gutter clean-outs. Even more specifically than that, how much I dislike those gutter screens. They seem like a pretty good idea, but in my opinion they aren't.
They do keep out the leaves. Dirt, aggregate from the shingles, seeds, and water still get in there. We've had to pull some pretty big saplings and large weeds out of gutters with screens on them that were growing in more than an inch of funk that still gets in there.
Here's my suggestion, don't put the screens on. The gutters may need cleaned a little more often, but they are much more easily cleaned. Here's how we do it if there's no screens.
If you can walk your roof, simply run a hose up there, walk the roof line and spray them out. If you have a blower it's easier yet. Just blow it out. After you're done simply rake up all the debris. It'll only take a few minutes to clean them out, and only a little longer to rake up the debris. If you can't walk the roof, it's going to take a little longer. You'll have to move the ladder several times. With the hose though you can clean out 10 or 15 feet at a time.
If you have those screens though they will all need to be taken off before you can get that glunk out, and it won't come out quite so easily and will be much messier.
