A bat on your siding in broad daylight is almost always a mother taking a thermal break between feeding flights.

She's not sick. She's not rabid. Female bats form maternity colonies behind shutters, in soffit gaps, and inside bat houses through the summer. A lactating mother hunts hundreds of insects per night and sometimes ends up on the sunlit wall outside the roost waiting for dusk. She'll re-enter on her own.

- If she's in full sun on a hot wall, prop a piece of cardboard nearby to offer shade. Don't touch her
- If she's on the ground or a pet has made contact, cover her with an overturned bowl and call your county health department — direct contact requires testing
- Don't seal roost entrances between May and August — pups inside can't fly yet
- If you want bats relocated, a one-way exclusion device installed in September is the standard method. A wildlife professional handles it in an afternoon
- A bat house mounted on a south-facing wall at least fifteen feet up gives them an alternative to your soffits

She eats more mosquitoes in one night than a bug zapper catches in a month. The wall she's clinging to is her commute, not a crisis.

If you’ve ever dealt with the itch of chigger bites, you know how frustrating they can be.

As temperatures rise, conditions across Texas become ideal for chiggers, especially in areas with thick vegetation and moisture. Molly Keck, AgriLife Extension senior program specialist in Texas A&M Entomology, says understanding chiggers can help you avoid them.

If you’ve suddenly noticed small flies, gnats, drain flies, or moisture-associated insects around sinks, drains, bathrooms, kitchens, laundry rooms, or indoor plants lately — you are definitely not alone.

We’ve seen a major increase across Central Alabama over the past several weeks.

One of the biggest misconceptions is:
“It must mean my house is dirty.”

In most cases, that’s not true at all.

These pests are usually tied to moisture + organic buildup + seasonal environmental conditions working together at the same time.

As temperatures rise and humidity increases across Alabama, microscopic organic material and biofilm inside drains, condensate lines, overflows, garbage disposals, damp soil, crawlspaces, and other moisture-prone areas begin breaking down faster. That creates an ideal breeding environment for these insects.

So while moisture is part of the equation, the real trigger is often the sudden seasonal increase in humidity, warmth, and microbial growth happening regionally all at once.

That’s why many homes begin seeing activity during the same window of time.

A few important things to know:

• These pests are often symptoms of an underlying moisture or organic buildup condition.
• Sprays alone are usually temporary if the breeding source remains active.
• Drain cleaning, moisture reduction, airflow improvement, and removal of organic buildup are usually the long-term solution.
• Even very clean homes can experience seasonal moisture-related fly activity.

At Tire Swing, our goal is not just to reduce the insects you see — it’s to help identify the conditions supporting them so the problem can be addressed more effectively long term.

Sometimes that means treatment.
Sometimes that means cleaning.
Sometimes that means improving moisture management.

Usually, it’s a combination of all three.

Central Alabama’s climate creates extremely favorable conditions for these pests this time of year, so if you’re dealing with them right now, you are absolutely not the only one.

Before you scrape, spray, or knock something down outside — pause and identify it first.

Not every insect structure is a problem. Some are actually helping control pest pressure naturally.

LEAVE IT:
• Praying mantis cases — beneficial predators
• Mud dauber nests — help reduce spiders and other insects
• Wheel bug eggs — hatch into important predatory insects
• Tree lichen — harmless natural growth, not a pest issue

REMOVE IT:
• SLF egg masses — invasive spotted lanternfly eggs
• Spongy moth masses — destructive invasive defoliators
• Bagworm pods — can heavily damage ornamentals and evergreens
• Stink bug eggs — common nuisance pest populations

Good pest management starts with observation, not reaction.

Nature already has built-in pest control systems. The goal is to recognize what’s helping, what’s harmless, and what actually needs intervention.

Always check local invasive species guidance for your area, since regional pest pressures vary, or message us.

Ants will eat practically any kind of food, but are especially attracted to sweets. Ant identification is relatively simple due to their distinct body regions.
