Should I drain my pool?
Overflowing pools are common during the summer season and we are often asked 'should I drain my pool?'
There is no correct answer to this question but the quick answer is NO. Let it overflow, it will find its own level and when the inclement weather passes any excess water will evaporate. Draining the pool not only lowers the water level but also drains chemicals and the fresh rainwater will turn the pool green overnight. Even worse, if your yard is prone to flooding all the yard water will flow into the pool leaving dirt and residue that can permanently stain the surface.
One time we do recommend draining the pool is if your patio has been incorrectly installed and your house floods when the pool overflows. Thankfully this is rare but if you are unfortunately in this situation then YES, drain your pool about 6 inches before heavy storms and you will just have to live with the pool turning green and the pool guy charging you to rebalance the pool chemicals.
Best of luck in the next storm.
