Ash Tree in Your Yard? Signs Worth Watching

Emerald ash borer, a small invasive beetle, has been found in parts of Northern Colorado. Its larvae feed under the bark of ash trees.

Once leaves drop, some signs can be easier to spot on bare branches and trunks.

Look for thinning or dead branches near the top of the tree, small D-shaped holes in the bark, vertical bark splits, and patches where woodpeckers have chipped away the outer bark.

Not sure if your tree is an ash? Ash branches and buds grow in pairs directly across from each other, and older trees often have diamond-patterned bark.

These signs can have other causes, so it's worth getting a trained eye on it. Kincaid Tree Surgery's ISA certified arborist can take a closer look if something doesn't seem right.

Turn Fallen Leaves Into Free Mulch 🍁

Before you bag up every leaf in the yard, consider putting some of them back to work.

Run your mower over dry leaves a few times to shred them into small pieces. Shredded leaves break down faster and won't mat together the way whole leaves can.

Spread a layer about 2 to 3 inches deep over garden beds and the soil around your trees, keeping it a few inches away from the trunk.

On the lawn, a light layer of shredded leaves is fine as long as you can still see grass through it.

As the leaves break down, they add organic matter to our dry Colorado soil and help hold in moisture.

Do you bag your leaves, mulch them, or let them be?

Myth vs. Fact: Topping a Tree Makes It Safer

Myth: Cutting the top off a big tree makes it smaller and safer.

Fact: Topping often does the opposite. Removing large sections of the crown leaves big wounds that a tree can't easily seal, which can let decay set in.

The tree also responds by pushing out fast, crowded sprouts. These new shoots are weakly attached and can grow back taller than before, making them more likely to break in wind or heavy snow.

When a tree has outgrown its space, careful pruning by a trained professional can reduce its size while keeping it healthy and well shaped.

Kincaid Tree Surgery's ISA certified arborist can help you figure out what your tree actually needs.

How Trees Get Ready for Winter 🍂

Northern Colorado's mild fall days can make it feel like summer is hanging on, but your trees are already preparing for winter.

As days get shorter and nights get cooler, trees stop making chlorophyll, the green pigment that turns sunlight into food. That's when the yellows, oranges, and reds show through.

At the base of each leaf, a thin layer of cells forms and seals it off so the leaf can drop cleanly.

Next spring's buds are already set, wrapped in tough scales that protect them through the cold.

This resting stage is called dormancy, and it helps trees ride out freezing nights and Front Range wind.

Which tree on your street always hangs onto its leaves the longest?

Young Trees Need a Little Extra Care This Winter ❄️

Cold nights are settling in across Northern Colorado, and young trees feel our winters more than established ones do.

Thin-barked trees like maples, lindens, honeylocusts, and fruit trees can get sunscald. That's damage to the bark when warm winter sun heats the trunk during the day and a hard freeze follows at night, often on the south or southwest side.

A light-colored tree wrap on the lower trunk can help. Many homeowners put it on in late fall and take it off in spring so it doesn't trap moisture against the bark.

A layer of mulch over the root zone, kept a few inches away from the trunk, helps protect roots too.

Is there a young tree in your yard you're keeping an eye on this winter?

After the Wind, Take a Walk Around Your Trees

This week's gusty winds were a reminder of how quickly fall along the Front Range can turn blustery.

Now that things have calmed down, take a slow walk around your yard and look up into your trees.

Watch for hanging or partly broken limbs, fresh cracks in the trunk or large branches, and soil that looks lifted or cracked around the base.

A tree that leans more than it did before the wind is also worth a closer look.

Stay clear of anything large, hanging overhead, or near power lines. Those are jobs for trained professionals, and Kincaid Tree Surgery can help with pruning or removing wind-damaged trees.

Fall Is a Great Time to Look Up

As canopies begin thinning out, it can become easier to notice what’s happening with a tree’s branch structure.

Dead limbs, damaged branches, crossing limbs, or areas with unusual growth can all be signs that a closer assessment is worthwhile.

Proper pruning is about much more than making a tree look tidy.

Thoughtful pruning can improve structure, remove damaged material, and support the long-term health of the tree.

For large trees especially, pruning is a job best left to trained professionals with the right equipment.

Dormant Doesn’t Mean Dead 🌳
When deciduous trees begin dropping their leaves, they aren’t shutting down for good.
They’re entering dormancy, an energy-saving strategy that helps them survive Colorado’s colder months.
Dropping leaves reduces water loss while the tree preserves resources for the next growing season.
Take a close look at a healthy bare twig later this fall and you may even notice buds already waiting for next spring.
Trees are remarkably good at planning ahead.
