I always appreciate when homeowners in Southwest Louisiana take a minute to share how their service went.

Here’s a recent review from Jimmie Grundy:

“Brent was very professional, friendly and does a good job. When finished, he explained everything done and ask if there is any other problems. Great Guy….”

The part I appreciate most is hearing that Brent took the time to explain what he had done before leaving. Whether we're handling termites or another pest problem, I want homeowners to understand what was found, what work was completed, and have a chance to ask questions.

Thank you, Jimmie, for the kind words about Brent and for trusting our team with your property.

When I handle termite problems in Southwest Louisiana, I don't just treat the first place where a homeowner noticed activity.

I want to know where the termites are coming from and whether there are signs anywhere else around the property.

That means checking the foundation, looking at moisture around the house, inspecting nearby wood and trim, and paying attention to areas where soil or mulch sits close to the structure.

Once I know where the activity is concentrated, I can treat the necessary areas and address the conditions that may be helping termites stay active.

One thing I always explain is that removing a mud tube doesn't remove the termites. You have to deal with the activity behind that visible sign.

That's why termite control starts with a proper inspection instead of guessing from what you can see.

There are a few things I always tell homeowners in Southwest Louisiana to keep an eye on when it comes to termites.

Take a look at the exposed foundation every so often. If you notice thin mud tubes running up from the soil, don't just wipe them away and assume the problem is gone.

Pay attention to moisture too. Gutters that aren't draining properly, water collecting beside the house, or soil that stays damp against the foundation can all create better conditions for termite activity.

You don't need to inspect your house every day. Just knowing what to look for can help you notice a change earlier.

When I get a call about termites in Southwest Louisiana, it usually starts with something small that a homeowner almost ignored.

It might be a thin mud tube along the foundation, a piece of trim that feels softer than it should, or a pile of discarded wings near a window or door.

The problem with termites is that most of their activity stays hidden. You can have termites moving between the soil and your home without seeing them out in the open.

I recently handled a termite job in Jennings that started with one small dirt-looking line near a baseboard. Once I inspected the property, we found where the activity was coming from and a moisture issue outside that was helping create the right conditions for them.

I wrote up the full job and what we did in this month's journal.

“Glad to see Darrius when he arrives. He's always courteous and professional. He been our inspector for almost 8 years. Speaks to the way the company treats their employees. Thanks.”

Eight years is a long time to build trust with a homeowner, and I am glad Darrius continues to provide the courteous and professional service Thomas has come to expect.

Thank you, Thomas, for your kind words and for continuing to trust Extermatrim with your property.

Before you worry about getting rid of spiders, start by looking at what is attracting them.

I usually tell homeowners to remove webs as soon as they see them instead of letting them build up. Then take a look around the outside of the house. Shrubs touching the walls, cluttered garages, and outdoor lights that attract insects can all make a property more appealing to spiders.

It also helps to check under porch ceilings, around garage doors, and under the eaves every so often since those are common places where webs appear.

These simple habits will not stop every spider, but they can make a noticeable difference over time.

I start getting more calls about spiders around Southwest Louisiana in August than most people expect.

Usually, it is not because someone suddenly has dozens of spiders inside the house.

It starts with little things. New webs around the front porch every morning. A few spiders in the garage. Webs showing up around outdoor lights or along the corners of the house.

Those signs usually tell me spiders are finding plenty of insects to feed on around the property.

I recently handled a spider prevention job that started exactly that way. What looked like a small nuisance turned out to have a few simple causes that were easy to correct.

I wrote up the full job and how it turned out in this month's journal entry.
