My 16-year-old grandson had a homework assignment that required him to interview someone about September 11, 2001. He chose to interview me and my husband, Paul.
As we answered his questions, I was instantly taken back to that day—the emotions, the fear, the trauma, and the overwhelming uncertainty of not knowing what would happen next.
But I also remembered what came afterward: the way our country came together. For a time, so many of the things that divided us seemed less important. We grieved together, prayed together, helped one another, and stood together as Americans.
As I reflect on 9/11 today, I also think about the ways that day shaped our country long after the initial togetherness began to fade.
My hope is that we never forget not only the lives lost and the heroes who responded, but also the sense of unity, compassion, and care we showed one another during that time. We could use more of that today.
May we remember that we do not have to agree on everything to treat one another with kindness, dignity, and respect.
Never forget. 🇺🇸
