Why “bombing for German Cockroaches” falls short.

German Cockroaches spend the majority of their lives in cracks or crevices that are just big enough to fit their bodies. Often they are found under the Refrigerator, around the dishwasher and under/behind kitchen cabinets because they want to be near warmth, food and water.

Bombs kill roaches on contact but have poor residual control. The product often never reaches the hidden roaches.

Thorough, professional inspections and treatments are crucial for German Cockroach elimination.

Bombs, many store-bought baits and just spraying the baseboards won’t cut it!

Trust the professionals at Virtues Professional Pest Control to take an integrated approach to eliminating infestations.

Where do all the new yellowjacket and hornet queens go for winter?

They leave the nest and find a hiding spot of their own.

In late summer and fall, colonies produce new queens that mate before heading off to find shelter. Under loose bark, inside decaying logs, and in protected crevices are common winter hideouts. Some may even find their way into a shed, attic, or gaps around your home.

Each queen settles into a dormant state to conserve energy until spring. Here in Maryland, the workers, males, and original queen die as winter sets in.

When warm weather returns, the surviving queens emerge and begin building new nests, starting with just themselves doing all the work.

That big paper nest you notice after the leaves fall? It generally won’t be reused next year. But another queen may choose the same area if it still offers good shelter.

One hidden queen this winter could be the beginning of an entire colony next summer.

Before You Set Another Mouse Trap, Check These 3 Spots

When I’m checking a home for mouse entry points, these are three areas I pay close attention to:

1. Where the AC lines enter the house
There’s often a gap around the lines where they go through the wall. Sometimes it was never sealed properly, and sometimes the material used to seal it has deteriorated. Look around the whole opening, including behind the insulation.

2. Crawlspace doors and vents
I’m looking for doors that don’t fit tightly, gaps around the frame, and damaged vent screens. These are easy areas to overlook, especially if you don’t go into your crawlspace very often.

3. Garage door weather stripping
The bottom corners are a big one. The seal can look fine across most of the door but still leave an opening at either end. Close the door and check for daylight along the bottom and sides.

Finding where mice are getting in is an important part of solving the problem. You can catch the mice inside, but if the openings are still there, you’re leaving the opportunity for more to follow.

Ants trailing under the siding to get in a home. There has been quite a few late season ant calls recently. This ant is even active if they are nesting indoors in the winter.

Mice can get in your home in many different ways this fall. Checking and sealing up common sites around the home can stop mice in their tracks. Check your weather stripping, crawlspace doors, crawlspace vents, and any pipes or hoses that go into the home. They only need 1/4” to get in!
