Yeah, yellowjacket season is definitely here. We’ve had plenty of them to deal with lately.

Ground nests like this one can be tricky because you may never see the nest itself. All you might notice is yellowjackets coming and going from a small hole in the ground, often hidden in grass, landscaping, or an old animal burrow.

Late summer and early fall is when colonies are at their largest and activity really picks up. If you notice a steady stream of yellowjackets heading into one spot in the yard, you’ve probably found their front door.

Keep an eye out while mowing and working around the yard. Finding the nest early can save you from an unpleasant surprise.

There’s something almost pretty about a big yellowjacket nest when you get a good look at it.

The layers and patterns are pretty impressive when you think about how they built the whole thing from chewed-up wood fiber. Then you remember there are hundreds of yellowjackets living inside it.

This one was built in the crawlspace of a home. When you find a nest this size, the best thing to do is give the area some space and leave the situation alone until it can be properly treated. Large nests can have a lot of activity around them, and a crawlspace doesn’t give you much room to work with.

Yellowjackets are pretty impressive builders. Just not the kind of builders you want setting up shop underneath your house.

If you find something like this, let someone who deals with them regularly take care of it.

Sometimes keeping rodents out is as simple as closing off an easy way in.

These crawl space vent covers are made to keep rodents from entering through the foundation vents while still allowing the crawl space to ventilate.

Mice and other small critters don't need much room to squeeze through, and those vents can be an easy entry point. Covering them properly helps keep the crawl space from becoming an open invitation.

A little prevention now can save you from dealing with unwanted guests later.

Bedbugs are one of those pests you really don't want to find in your house.

What starts with a few bugs can turn into a full-blown infestation surprisingly fast. They hide in mattresses, bed frames, furniture, and tiny cracks around the room. They can also hitch a ride on clothing, luggage, and furniture, making it very easy for them to spread from one place to another.

And the worst part is that you can have them for a while before you realize what's happening.

This video gives you a close-up look at bedbugs and what they look like tucked into the seams of a mattress. Keep an eye out for the bugs themselves, tiny dark spots on your sheets or mattress, small blood stains, shed skins, or tiny eggs.

Once bedbugs get established, they can be incredibly difficult to get rid of. They're not something you want to put off dealing with.

If you find signs of bedbugs, don't wait and hope they disappear. The sooner you catch them, the easier it is to get ahead of the infestation.

This is a Brown Recluse spider, one of the few spiders in our area that's actually worth paying attention to.

They're usually light brown to dark tan with long, slender legs. While they're often identified by a violin-shaped marking on their back, that marking isn't always easy to see, so it's not the best way to identify one.

The good news is they're not aggressive. They prefer to stay hidden, and most bites happen when the spider gets trapped against someone's skin in a shoe, clothing, or bedding.

That said, a Brown Recluse bite is something to take seriously. While many bites heal without major complications, some can damage the surrounding tissue and take weeks or even months to fully recover from. If you believe you've been bitten and the area continues to worsen, it's important to seek medical care.

Finding a single Brown Recluse doesn't always mean you have a larger problem, but if you're seeing them regularly, it's worth having your home inspected.

A little story from this week.

We were at a home treating for termites when one of the neighbors walked over and asked if we'd mind taking a look at their house too. They figured it couldn't hurt to check.

Turns out they had termites as well.

Just because your neighbor has termites doesn't mean they spread from one house to the next. It's usually just a sign that they're active in the area, and that's reason enough to take a look around your own home.

The two photos are from different houses, but they tell the same story. Sometimes you don't know termites are there until you go looking.

You never really know where bald-faced hornets are going to decide to build.

This nest was attached directly to the side door of a customer's garage. Needless to say, it made leaving the house a little more interesting than they would have liked.

Bald-faced hornets are impressive builders, but they're also very protective of their nests. When one shows up on a doorway that's used every day, it's usually best to take care of it before someone gets stung.

The second photo shows the same door after the nest was removed. Back to being just a normal trip through the garage.

Take a look at the photo. That little guy is standing inside one of our vole bait stations.

A lot of people assume the station is the trap, but it's really just a secure, tamper-resistant container that holds the bait. The station protects the bait from pets, kids, and other wildlife while allowing voles to get to it.

It's a simple, targeted way to deal with an active vole problem without leaving bait exposed around the yard.

Most people never get a chance to see a vole up close, so we thought this was a pretty neat picture to share.

If you've ever wondered what mole control looks like, here's a quick look at one of the methods we use.

This machine pumps carbon monoxide through the tunnel system. Because moles live underground and rely on those tunnels, they simply lose consciousness and pass without stress or panic.

It's a targeted method that leaves the lawn intact and is safe for people and pets when properly applied.

Thought some of you dealing with mole hills this year might find it interesting.

It's always funny showing homeowners these entry points after we've found them.

The gap in this photo was being used by pine squirrels to get into a place they definitely shouldn't be. Most people would never notice it, even if they were looking right at it. Then a squirrel comes along and somehow decides, "Yep, that'll work."

You can walk around a house a hundred times and never think twice about a spot like this. Meanwhile, they've been using it as their own private entrance for who knows how long.

We've found squirrels getting in through places that looked way too small, and somehow they always seem to prove us wrong.

They don't need much. Just one little opening and a reason to check it out.
