Here's something most people never hear: the EPA reports that indoor air is often 2–5× more polluted than outdoor air — and can spike up to 1,000× higher during and after painting. We spend roughly 90% of our time indoors breathing it.

Why should you care? Conventional paint off-gasses the same VOCs found in cigarette smoke — benzene, formaldehyde, and toluene. Benzene and formaldehyde are confirmed human carcinogens, and toluene is a known neurotoxin. The EPA notes these don't stop emitting when the paint dries. Lung cancer in people who never smoked, along with VOC-linked neurological conditions, has been rising for years.

Limewash is different: zero VOC, breathable, and mineral-based, so your walls stay beautiful without trapping toxins in your air.

Did you know that modern latex paint found on most walls and ceilings is connected to many of the major health epidemics in society. Lung Cancer, Autism, Asthma, Parkinsons, Alzheimer’s and over a dozen neurological diseases. Hundreds of studies on this stuff. It’s the VOC’s

New research raises concerns about potential health risks from common paint chemicals, especially for pregnant women. Here's what to know.

Conventional paint doesn't just add to your indoor air pollution — it creates the whole problem.

Every coat seals your walls in a non-breathable film that off-gasses VOCs indefinitely (they don't stop when it dries) AND traps the fumes from your cleaners and air fresheners inside with nowhere to go. It's a gas chamber disguised as a fresh coat of paint. It's no wonder the EPA reports indoor air is often 2–5 times more polluted than outdoor air, and we spend about 90% of our time indoors (EPA, "The Inside Story: A Guide to Indoor Air Quality").

Limewash is the opposite: mineral-based, breathable, zero VOC. It lets your walls exhale instead of sealing your family in with the fumes — with the same soft, living depth you see here. Ask us about starting your Zero VOC Home.

This Independence weekend, we're thinking about the veterans and generations before us who built this country by hand — including the walls. Colonial builders limewashed their homes with slaked lime, water, and natural pigment. No factories, no synthetic chemicals. Just the land and hard work.

Somewhere along the way we traded that for convenience in a can: synthetic paint and synthetic cleaners, both loaded with VOCs, sealed into our homes by paint that doesn't breathe. The EPA's own research (the TEAM Study, 600+ residents across multiple states) found indoor VOC levels routinely 2–5x higher than outdoors, regardless of location.

We can't turn back the clock on everything. But we can bring that old, self-reliant, natural-materials mindset back to our own homes — starting with the walls. That's what our Zero VOC Home Program is built for.
