All of these 90+-degree days don't make it easy to keep it smelling fresh in the kitchen. Another easy way to combat sneaky odors is to keep your trash can and it's location sanitized and clean. Here are a few tips from a pro 😀:

- Thoroughly disinfect your full can every other week, especially handles and rims, and don't forget to wipe down the surfaces of the cabinet/corner where it lives. Use a 5% bleach dilution, or a specialized sanitizer--use specific cleaners for stainless or wood exteriors to prevent discoloration or damage 🫧

- Sprinkle baking soda in the bottom of the can to help absorb odors. Drops of essential oils can optionally be added for extra pleasantness 🍊

- Save and place silica packets or small sachets of rice in the bottom of the can if you deal with moisture/mold issues 💧

- Change trash out weekly OR as soon as it gets 90% full OR as soon as it starts to smell to avoid germ-spreading trash spillover and odors permeating the can 🗑

Do you feel like you're frequently cleaning, but still dealing with odors or dingy, dull-looking surfaces? Your tools could be the culprit!

If you're not also cleaning and sanitizing things like your sponges, microfiber cloths, brooms and vacuums, you could just be transferring odor-causing bacteria and other germs, dust, and hair between areas instead of removing.

Let's start with vacuums! With regular home use, vacuums can be cleaned every other month (or as needed, if something particularly gross gets sucked into it). I do mine every other week since it gets a lot of use!

- Empty the canister or change the bag.
- Soak and wash all detachable canisters, tubes, and hoses in hot, soapy water.
- Wash filters in hot water. Replace filters every 3-6 months based on your particular unit's recommendations (and just look at the filter! If it looks dirty after washing, it IS dirty and should be replaced).
- Wipe down rollers and brush bristles with a damp, soapy cloth and cut away any hair or strings.
- If you need an additional step of sanitizing (you vacuumed up something organic and/or gross, you use your vacuum at multiple locations), you can spray the parts with either hydrogen peroxide or a 5% dilution of bleach.
- Let everything air dry, then reassemble.
- For extra freshness, you can sprinkle baking soda on a rug and vacuum it up. A dryer sheet in your vacuum bag or canister can add a nice scent and improved dust containment while you go.

I think the only timelines I agree with are towels, windows (outsides/full), and mattresses.

Another Friday, another cleaning job completed!

This week's unsponsored amd random review: this foaming bleach spray! I've used it at home, and now, on the job, as my go-to bathroom cleaner. It's great on all surfaces! It's amazing for helping remove mildew, scum, and surface stains. As the label warns, it WILL discolor fabrics (sorry, kitchen towel! 😂)

I actually also somewhat experimentally used it to clean our garage door, which had that common green mold or algae growth on it. The garage door was easy to wipe clean after one application, left to sit for several minutes. Nothing has reappeared on the door, and it's been months!

Rating? 5 stars! Would recommend for hard surfaces where you want disinfection, not just cleaning! Yes, it discolored some fabric, but.... it's bleach spray 🤷‍♀️🤣
