Let's think about something we often overlook: when was the last time you cleaned the toilet brush or plunger holder? Cleaning these items regularly can prevent unpleasant odors in the bathroom. After cleaning the inside of the toilet, simply flush and rinse the brush or plunger in the clean water. Don't forget to clean the holder before putting it back with a general-purpose cleaner and gloves. Wipe down the exterior and interior of the holder with paper towels after spraying it with cleaner. Although it may seem unpleasant, this step is crucial for maintaining a cleaner-smelling bathroom.

Here is an effective multi-purpose cleaner. Mix 4 oz of vinegar, 1 drop of Dawn dish soap, and water in a 32 oz spray bottle. It cleans and disinfects various surfaces, excluding granite or special countertops. It also works well for bathroom cleaning, removing soap scum and cleaning sinks and toilets (but not heavily soiled). It can be used for quick floor and carpet cleanups, and even for natural wood floors with a damp microfiber cloth. Follow the instructions for cleaning pet messes on carpets and upholstery.

I haven’t posted for a while because it seems like I’m constantly busy, which is a good thing. Here is a tip for those who have an obnoxious odor and you don’t know the source. If it’s possible to shut off the area, so it is completely black, you can usually discover the source with a black light. You will be able to see the problem immediately. It will show up probably like the green in the image. Sorry it’s the northern lights, but when you see this the spot you will know where that gross obnoxious thing is that you can’t get rid of. It might be in the grout of the tile or in the edge of a carpet, or underneath the padding of a carpet, or it could be on the lower part of the wall or even on the back of a toilet or urinal. You might never find it unless you blacklight it. Don’t just cover the problem with odor fighting chemicals, fix the problem by removing it.

If you've got stinky stopped-up drains, instead of using toxic drain cleaners or bleach and taking a chance of spilling it, perhaps burning yourself or ruining your clothing, try this: use peroxide and baking soda. Remove as much water as you can, then dump a box of baking soda down the drain, then slowly pour a bottle of hydrogen peroxide (3%) into the powdery mix. Let it bubble and clean the drain for an hour. Next, slowly and carefully pour boiling water down the drain to loosen and rinse out any leftover debris (don't let the hot water splash). To maintain the drain, mix 1 oz of peroxide and 1 oz of baking soda per gallon of water, then pour the watery mixture in the drain until it's full or a maximum of 32 oz in one drain. Obviously, you can make less or more as needed.
