Thank you Deputy Animal Control Officer Iames of Prince William County Animal Shelter for rescuing and transporting this Bald Eagle after a member of the public found it down and unable to fly.

This eagle is in rough shape after suffering a skull fracture and eye trauma at least a few days ago. Like 90%+ of the adult eagles we treat, this one is also suffering from lead toxicity. Because the trauma was not witnessed, there is no way to know if the high lead levels led to the trauma or if lead was ingested while the bird was weak on the ground.

Luckily, there is no lead in the gastrointestinal tract currently, so we are working to chelate the lead in the blood while providing fluids, pain medications, rest, and treatment for a heavy burden of intestinal parasites.

This eagle’s prognosis is guarded at this time, but we will do everything in our power to allow for a full recovery!
