We had our own tick encounter last weekend.
After a short local hike — only about 15 minutes — we found 2 lone star ticks on us and our dog. That’s a pretty good sign tick activity is heavy in our area right now.

Lone star ticks are easy to recognize once you know what to look for. The adult female has a distinctive single white dot on her back, which is where the name “lone star” tick comes from.

Lone star ticks are more than just a nuisance — they’ve been linked to alpha-gal syndrome, an allergy that can cause reactions to red meat and other mammal-based products.

Tick prevention matters:
✔ Check yourself, kids, and pets after being outside
✔ Keep grass and brush trimmed
✔ Watch wooded edges and shaded areas
✔ Stay proactive around your home and yard

Not every bug is the enemy.

This little green visitor is a katydid — a harmless, leaf-like insect that’s usually just hanging out in trees, shrubs, and garden areas.

They’re a great example of why proper bug identification matters. Some insects can cause problems around your home, while others are simply part of a healthy outdoor ecosystem.

🐝 Seeing lots of wasps flying low around holes in the ground?

You may be dealing with Southern Yellowjackets.

Unlike many other wasps, these pests often build nests underground and can become very aggressive if disturbed — especially during lawn work, landscaping, or kids playing nearby.

A few signs to watch for:
✔ Heavy wasp activity near the ground
✔ Multiple wasps entering/exiting the same hole
✔ Increased activity during warm afternoons

If you notice this around your home, it’s best to avoid disturbing the area until it can be properly treated.
