This weekend, Bill’s Heat Pumps would like to remind anyone using a heat pump that most brands and models will not efficiently produce heat in subzero temperatures. The recommendation for the weekend is to turn them off and resume use when temperatures become more manageable.

Your heat pump will likely only blow warm air, especially during the overnight hours. Turn on your furnaces to help keep pipes from freezing so we don’t need to bother Tim’s Plumbing 😊

Today I opened up the outdoor unit of a heat pump and found this — a massive rat’s nest. Several wires had been chewed through, and the damage was extensive enough that the system couldn’t be saved.

Heat pumps are a paradise for rodents. They’re warm in the winter, shaded in the summer, and usually left undisturbed — the perfect hiding spot if no one’s looking.

This kind of issue could have been caught long ago with routine servicing. Regular maintenance doesn’t just keep your system running efficiently — it protects it from problems like this.
