PSA for when you leave town and hire a pet sitter. Strange things can happen when no one is at home.
I have a client that goes out of town periodically with a couple of cats. I go up every 3-4 days to empty the litter, restock the food, give them some attention. Cats do weird things. In this case, one of them somehow turned on the hot water spigot in the bathroom sink. It only ran for a couple of days but I'm sure the electric bill will take a hit. I turned off both water valves under the sink to avoid that problem again.
On the first trip there, I noticed the toilet running non-stop. Just needs some adjusting to the mechanism that turns the water off but not everyone knows how to do that.
Particularly in the winter, if there is a chance of frozen pipes, consider spending a few extra bucks and hire your pet sitter as a house sitter. That way, the person will be in the house, making sure the pipes don't freeze and taking care of things as they happen. Of course, house sitter will no doubt come and go throughout the day but you have the security of someone being there during the evening hours.
