All the coffee comes from our 7-acre family farm nestled on the slopes of Volcan Santa Maria, 5,000 ft above sea level. The farm enjoys rich volcanic soils, a humid cloud forest climate and a staff dedicated to ensuring each step in the coffee growing process is done with care. Joe and Terrie said it best! When you’re looking for a smooth, silky treat, our Canche Roast is the perfect indulgence.

Light and bright, this roast brings out the natural qualities of our high-altitude beans. Canche is a best-of-both worlds roast, because it gives a natural sweetness for those who usually reach for the sugar bowl, but it doesn’t outshine the unique flavor, for those who prefer their coffee black.

(And in case you didn’t know, canche is a Guatemalan slang term for blonde, a nickname all the Brodbeck boys grew up with!)

What is shade-grown coffee?

Instead of clear cutting land for mass production, shade-grown coffee prioritizes slower growth under a canopy of established, native trees.

Slower ripening means better quality and flavor. It also means less harm for the local ecosystem, allowing birds, insects and plants to remain in their habitat with minimal impact.

Care for the environment is one of our family’s (and business’s) values so we always aim for balance on our farm, trying to give back more than we take.

Did you know there’s no mail service at our finca? If you want to send us fan mail, you’d need to come to Guatemala and hand deliver it.

Despite how remote our farm is, when we drop off our freshly roasted coffee at the shipping center in the closest city, it often takes only two or three days to reach Alabama!

This is a big deal, because coffee is at its peak freshness in the first few weeks after roasting, so timing is key. It’s why we roast in small batches, and only keep a little stock in the US at a time.

There are a lot of things that make our coffee delicious, and freshness is a big one. Trust us—you don’t want to know how old that grocery store coffee is!

Forget the plastic hearts and singing bears — the best way to spend Valentine’s Day is quality time with the people we love. Laughing together, sharing memories and feeling grateful for every ounce of love in our lives.

And that time is always made better by a cup of coffee! We don’t support overconsumption on holidays, unless, of course, it’s an overconsumption of coffee 😉
