One of the prettiest sites we’ve ever been asked to evaluate. It’s easy to see why the prospective property owners want to build their forever home here. Before they put in an offer, they called us to determine if the soils would support a septic system. We always say “investigate before you invest!”

We were on a site recently where heavy trucks had driven through the yard. When we completed the soil borings last winter, we advised the property owner to protect the septic installation area from vehicular traffic. Thankfully, he listened and his drainfield was spared any damage.

Septic areas need loose, healthy soil to properly absorb and treat wastewater. When trucks, skid steers, concrete trucks or other equipment drive over the proposed drainfield area, they compact the soil. Keep the area where we do soil borings protected with a snow fence or flagging in order to keep the soil in optimal condition.

When the homeowner tells you all these rocks came out of the yard where you’re going to be doing the soil borings. 😳🤨🙄🫤

Did you know there are more than 20,000 named soil series throughout the country? In Indiana alone, there are more than 500!

With hundreds of different soil series across the state, the soil can change dramatically from one property to the next. A registered soil scientist is trained to identify these differences and understand how they affect things like septic systems, drainage and seasonal high water tables.
