Before the foundation.
Before the framing.
Before the finishes.

Roses are ❤️, violets are 💙.
Cold Indiana winters, we’re tired of you.

Now that most of the snow has melted, the frost line is deeper and the soils are like concrete. My knees, wrists and especially my shoulders are looking forward to spring!

Google tells us nearly 70% of Midwest households have dishwashers. Of those homes, 13% use it 2–3 times per week; 19% use it 4–6 times per week; 13% use it 7 or more times per week; 18% don’t use it at all and 14% use it about once per week.

Remember that scraping dishes before washing helps protect your septic system. Removing grease, oils, fats and starchy foods off your plates before you load the dishwasher will help your septic system function properly, along with using septic-safe detergent and avoiding back-to-back loads.

Northern Indiana soils are all over the map: some drain great, some stay wet and some drain too fast. Over the course of our past 10 evaluations, we completed borings in eight different soil series, including Boyer, Blount, Pewamo and Tyner.

That’s why every good septic system starts with a soil evaluation by an Indiana Registered Soil Scientist, who has years of experience evaluating Hoosier soils. Get on our schedule by texting or calling (260) 668-9727.

Fun soil fact: whether it's a frigid 10 degrees below zero or a blazing 95 degrees, soil temperatures at six feet underground remain remarkably stable through all seasons.

✅ Beneficial bacteria stay active
✅ Wastewater treatment works year-round
✅ Pipes don’t freeze
✅ Systems stay more reliable

Your septic system doesn’t have a heater, but it does have billions of hard-working bacteria that naturally produce heat while doing their job. When a system is installed in the right soil, correctly sized and well-drained, it’s set up for long-term success.

Winter may freeze the surface (and your till tester!) but below that:

📌soil layers stay the same
📌seasonal high water table indicators remain

The soil profile doesn't disappear just because it's cold.

We were in several open fields today and thankfully the frost layer wasn't below six inches. Snow cover and crop residue really helped us out today so the frost wasn’t too deep.

You're buying toilet paper so you might as well grab the flushable wipes on the shelves too. Right? WRONG!

These wipes should never been used by someone utilizing a septic system. Unlike toilet paper, wipes are often made with synthetic materials or longer fibers that don't disintegrate rapidly in water. These non-degrading wipes can clump together with other debris, forming blockages in pipes and toilets. Clogs caused by wipes can lead to costly repairs! The term "flushable" on wipes can be misleading, as many wipes, even those marketed as such, are not designed to fully disintegrate in water like toilet paper.

Avoid costly repairs and damage to your system by just saying NO to these products!

Your septic tank is unlikely to freeze in this frigid weather, but your water lines could be a different story. Frozen pipes don't just affect your house-they can affect your septic system too. When the bitter cold passes and your pipes thaw, avoid running every faucet, doing laundry and taking showers all at once. A big surge of water can flood your tank and push solids where they don't belong. Ease back into your normal water use and your septic system will thank you.
