This morning at the Farm Progress Show, I announced some big momentum for water quality in Iowa.

More than 300,000 acres of cover crops have been enrolled in the Greater Des Moines Watershed this fall — nearly triple last year — and statewide cover crop cost-share enrollment has topped 1 million acres for the first time.

We’re also putting an additional $2.1 million toward our Cattle and Conservation Working Lands Program after available funding was fully committed within just 10 days of announcing its expansion during the State Fair.

The response is clear: Iowa farmers want to be part of the solution. We’re going to keep building on this momentum and putting resources behind proven, farmer-led conservation.

A successful field day doesn’t start the morning everyone arrives. It actually starts months, and sometimes even years earlier, with people willing to say yes to something new. 🌱💧

We want to give a very special thank you to Bruce Stoddard of Stoddard Farms, and Lynn Clarkson and Seneca Murley with Clarkson Grain and Clarkson Family Farms.

Bruce and Lynn were the first producers to sign up and have stuck with us through every step of the process—from initial site selection and conservation drainage design, through finding funding, and all the way to implementation.

Their willingness to open up their farms, work through the process with us, and let others learn from these projects is exactly what makes progress in conservation possible.

We also owe a huge thank you to our contractors, Seevers Farm Drainage and WRS Earthworks.

Thank you for trusting us with your customers, working alongside us throughout these projects, and putting your expertise on display during the live installation demonstrations.

The role contractors play in getting conservation drainage practices from a design on paper to a working system in the ground really can’t be overstated.

Seeing the Stoddard Farms saturated buffer and Clarkson Family Farms bioreactor come full circle—from spotting an opportunity on the landscape to showcasing installation in the field—was incredibly rewarding and encouraging.

These projects are a great example of what can happen when producers, contractors, conservation professionals, researchers, and partners all work together toward a common goal: productive agriculture and better water quality.

To Bruce, Lynn, Seneca, Seevers Farm Drainage, and WRS Earthworks—thank you for taking a chance on these projects, trusting the process, and helping us show conservation drainage in action. We truly couldn’t have done it without you. 💧🌽
