Our friends Sandhills Trolley Company said it best. Locally sourced is always our first choice here, but let’s face it, small business owners barely have the budget to pay themselves & technology is always moving us forward 🌟

A LITTLE FULL TRANSPARENCY FROM THIS SMALL BUSINESS OWNER… ❤️

Yes, Sandhills Trolley uses AI-generated graphics for many of our event thumbnails on our website and social media.

And no, it’s not because I’m lazy. 😂

It’s because I’m a small business owner using the tools available to me to do a job that would otherwise require hiring another person or outsourcing dozens of graphics every single month.

We HAVE invested thousands of dollars into professional branding and design for Sandhills Trolley by a local artist, so I absolutely believe in supporting local artists and businesses whenever we can.

But here’s the reality of running THIS small business…

I have 9 employees to pay. Insurance. Fuel. Maintenance and repairs on multiple trolleys. Booking and service fees that we DO NOT pass along to our customers. And about 47 other expenses that magically appear because apparently trolleys enjoy spending money too. 😑😂

We also do probably 99% of our own marketing.

With the number of different events we offer every month, paying a graphic designer to create an individual thumbnail for every event simply isn’t in our budget.

So I create them.

Just like I create the events, write the descriptions, handle bookings, answer emails, manage social media, coordinate partnerships, plan routes, work with our staff and wear the MANY other crowns that come with owning this company.

Most days, that means 10–12 hours a day, 5–7 days a week.

I’m working on that part. 😉😂

I completely understand the concerns surrounding AI, including the environmental concerns surrounding data centers. Those are valid conversations to have. But technology is also continuing to move forward, and I don’t believe small businesses should be shamed for responsibly using the tools available to help us survive, compete and operate more efficiently.

Heck, even Canva has become heavily AI-driven, and full access to those tools comes with a pretty hefty monthly price tag!

Maybe I look at technology a little differently because I came from the age when Accounts Payable and Accounts Receivable were handled on PEG BOARDS and running logs. 🤣

We couldn’t bank online.
Pay bills online.
Shop online.
Advertise online.
Sign contracts online.
Communicate instantly with customers online.

And now I can sit at my kitchen table and create a graphic for a trolley event in 30min (sometimes longer because tech ain’t my thing BUT learning 🤣) that helps someone scrolling through our website immediately recognize the event they’re looking for.

I’m THANKFUL for that technology.

For three years, I’ve tried to be incredibly transparent about this crazy little adventure called Sandhills Trolley, and I wanted to be just as transparent about this.

The amount of hate I see directed toward small businesses for using AI tools honestly blows my mind sometimes.

Most small businesses aren’t giant corporations sitting on unlimited marketing budgets.

We’re people trying to pay employees, pay bills, keep equipment running, support other businesses when we can, serve our communities and hopefully keep the doors open long enough to do it all again tomorrow.

So yes…some of our cute little event thumbnails are created with the help of AI.

But the EVENTS?

The ideas, planning, partnerships, employees, local businesses, memories, laughter, ridiculous games, surprises and experiences behind them?

Those are VERY real. ❤️

And we’ll keep using every reasonable tool available to keep this little trolley company rolling. 🚎

I guess it’s time to let the cat out of the bag….our cleaning services will come to an end over the next few months.

This was such a hard decision to make, we’ve loved every property & client like it was our own, and for our own guests.

We started this business to give our daughter a chance at sustainable work, grow her skills, confidence and independence….and it’s done just that.

Earlier this summer Cassidie decided to step out of cleaning and pursue something she’s wanted to do for a long time- work with animals (no surprise there 😉). Last year I stepped away from full time work, started another business that is really my passion, and went back to work full time in animal welfare. The reality is that if I could do it all well, I would.

As the Lord continues to lay a path in front of me that involves community, servitude & investing in my passion project, He too is asking that I trust him in this decision & utilize my time well.

Our cleaning service may be ending, but our business will remain in operation & will focus on the services we know we can give the time & attention to.

Thank you for being here, for your support & your continued support as we shift services for a more sustainable operation.

A humbling moment this evening as I clean out and organize my business card contacts.

Every single one of these cards represent someone I’ve personally met this year, shook hands with, had a conversation and took the time to connect with.

Sharing from a professional cleaning page I follow and interact with.

Business ownership had taught me so very much. But this is the biggest thing! Soooo many small businesses are doing it wrong, and it’s illegal.

If you’re telling your cleaners that they are on your team, can’t pick up their own work, and paying them as 1099 contractors then you are doing it wrong. True 1099’s are their own independent businesses and the IRS is very strict about how that business is conducted and paid.

I am confident that we have actually lost contracts from companies looking for “1099’s” because I am extremely knowledgeable about these requirements and ask the right questions.

CLEANERS- don’t settle!! If you want to be in a team, then you deserve to be treated with fair wages, the tools to do the job, workers comp, etc. if you want to grow your own books, are insured & registered, then you deserve to be treated as such and compensated with a fair percentage.

OWNERS- protect what you’re building and do the right thing.

🎯 Know what you’re doing or find something else to do!

I might come across as a mean girl but it needs to be said.

I don’t watch CleanTok, it’s not my thing. I’m more of a news kind of gal. Anyway, last night I got a video on my FYP and on the caption, the cleaner said they started their business the same time I did. So I watched because it felt nice that we had that in common.

Well, pretty quickly I knew something was wrong. The video was of a bathroom deep clean. They called the chrome faucet…stainless steel (in multiple videos). Then, they used Method All Purpose to clean the exterior of the toilet, no sanitizing/disinfecting the flush lever or seat. Think about it…three years and a toilet hasn’t been taken care of properly.

So, of course I ended up getting more cleaning videos right after. I scroll for HOURS (thanks adderall 🥲). This is what I saw:

1. An 8 month newbie commercial cleaner shared her DIY disinfectant recipe. Water and antibacterial Dawn Dish Soap in a spray bottle. Antibacterial and Disinfectant are NOT interchangeable. Antibacterial Dish Soaps will not eliminate bacteria on surfaces, only human skin. Someone is trusted AND paid to clean public spaces and they do not have the knowledge that’s necessary to do the job they were hired to do.

2. Another cleaner was talking about the products she brings for her plant-based cleaning service. She said for sanitizing purposes she uses Simple Green All Purpose. That product is not plant-based and it does not sanitize. There’s a client out there most likely being charged extra for this service and it’s not being done properly.

3. I saw a cleaner show how she deep cleans a toilet. She poured Clorox Toilet Bowl Cleaner in the bowl, but the bowl had a higher water level than usual. She didn’t force flush so, the toilet bowl cleaner got too diluted too quickly to work properly. Then, she sprayed Scrubbing Bubbles Easy Clean on the exterior. It removes grime but does not sanitize or disinfect. While spraying the seat, she sprayed over the toilet bowl cleaner. Now they’re mixed, which is not only dangerous but now the toilet bowl cleaner is even more ineffective.

4. I saw a video of a new house cleaner saying cleaning is the easy part and growing the business is difficult. She was going to show how she, as a professional cleaner, deep cleans a toilet. She uses OdoBan Disinfectant, which I love to do as well. Except, she assumed the cleaning and disinfecting happen simultaneously. It does not. To use OdoBan as a cleaner and a disinfectant, it has to be used in two rounds. Before using any disinfectant, you have to pre-clean the surface. Growing a business is absolutely hard work but, knowing how to properly clean and disinfect surfaces takes some research.

5. A house cleaner decided to start taking on biohazard jobs. She would be using a specialized Enzyme Cleaner as her all purpose. I’m a huge fan of enzyme cleaners but, there was a MASSIVE amount of grease and grime in the home. The product simply wouldn’t work fast enough to cut through it all because it lacks surfactants. Which means the grease would just end up getting smeared. Biohazard cleanings are no joke. You should get a certification by going through proper training. I can almost guarantee while the home might have looked clean in the end, I’m almost positive no surface was taken care of properly.

6. An Airbnb cleaner was showing how she washes and refreshes linen. She didn’t sanitize any of it. Then, she grabbed the bedding, made the beds and sprayed OdoBan Disinfectant all over because, “if you’re not disinfecting the sheets, wtf are you doing?!” OdoBan’s disinfecting claims are only for hard surfaces, not fabrics. Guests are checking into Airbnbs (that already charge insane cleaning fees) and yet they’re plopping their asses on toilets that weren’t cleaned and disinfected correctly, and bed sheets that were washed in the wrong water temp and not sanitized. Please think about that for a second.

I could go on and on.

Look, I don’t know everything. I will never claim to. I’m constantly trying to learn something new because I want to be great at what I do.

This is going to sound bitchy but at this point I do not care. Cleaning services aren’t cheap. Most clients that hire us are just like us, middle class people that need some help. This economy is 💩. Homeowners add us into their budget. Many save up for just one cleaning. It is not okay to take someone’s money, have them trust that you’re a professional, and yet you do not have the knowledge that is required to provide this service.

There are a TON of courses you can take online, there’s books, cleaning brand websites have pages worth of info on their products, etc. There simply is no excuse to not know the basics. Not only that, but there were videos I saw from cleaners that have been in the industry for 10+ years and they couldn’t clean a toilet properly. I really need you to digest that. It’s bonkers to me.

Thanks for coming to my Ted Talk.
