Bio? Non-Bio? What’s the Difference?
What is biological detergent? Biological clothes detergent contains enzymes that help break down the fatty, greasy, and starchy compounds that are found in some of the most common clothing stains such as pasta sauces, bike oil, and hamburger grease. These enzymes work to lift the stains out of fabrics, making them excellent stain removers and a very welcome addition to laundry detergents, turning stain removal into a quick and easy task.

What is non-biological laundry detergent? Non-biological detergents do not contain these enzymes. However, good non-bio detergents will still contain great built-in cleaning power that will ensure your clothing comes out of the washing machine clean and fresh.

When washing with non-bio detergents, especially when tackling particularly tough stains, you may need to use a slightly higher temperature to allow the detergent to do its job properly, but for some families, non-bio detergents can be a great option, especially if someone in the family has sensitive skin.

The use of enzymes in detergents
The use of enzymes in detergent formulations is now common in developed countries, with over half of all detergents presently available containing enzymes. In spite of the fact that the detergent industry is the largest single market for enzymes at 25 - 30% of total sales. Details of the enzymes used and the ways in which they are used, have rarely been published.
Dirt comes in many forms and includes proteins, starches and lipids. In addition, clothes that have been starched must be freed of the starch. Using detergents in water at high temperatures and with vigorous mixing, it is possible to remove most types of dirt but the cost of heating the water is high and lengthy mixing or beating will shorten the life of clothing and other materials. The use of enzymes allows lower temperatures to be employed and shorter periods of agitation are needed, often after a preliminary period of soaking. In general, enzyme detergents remove protein from clothes soiled with blood, milk, sweat, grass, etc. far more effectively than non-enzyme detergents. However, using modern bleaching and brightening agents, the difference between looking clean and being clean may be difficult to discern. At present only proteases and amylases are commonly used. Although a wide range of lipases is known, it is only very recently that lipases suitable for use in detergent preparations have been described.
Detergent enzymes must be cost-effective and safe to use. Early attempts to use proteases foundered because of producers and users developing hypersensitivity. This was combatted by developing dust-free granulates (about 0.5 mm in diameter) in which the enzyme is incorporated into an inner core, containing inorganic salts (e.g., NaCI) and sugars as preservative, bound with reinforcing, fibers of carboxymethyl cellulose or similar protective colloid. This core is coated with inert waxy materials made from paraffin oil or polyethylene glycol plus various hydrophilic binders, which later disperse in the wash. This combination of materials both prevents dust formation and protects the enzymes against damage by other detergent components during storage.
Enzymes are used in surprisingly small amounts in most detergent preparations, only 0.4 - 0.8% crude enzyme by weight (about 1% by cost). It follows that the ability to withstand the conditions of use is a more important criterion than extreme cheapness. Once released from its granulated form the enzyme must withstand anionic and non-ionic detergents, soaps, oxidants such as sodium perborate which generate hydrogen peroxide, optical brighteners and various less-reactive material all at pH values between 8.0 and 10.5. Although one effect of incorporating enzymes is that lower washing temperatures may be employed with consequent savings in energy consumption, the enzymes must retain activity up to 60 °C.

There are two types of najasat (uncleanliness) Najasat Khaliza and Najasat Khafifa.
Najasat Khaliza
This is intense uncleanliness and has strict orders, the following are examples of this:-
Excreta, Urine, Blood, puss, Blood from haiz, nifaas and istihaza, Mani and mazi, water from yes and breasts due to pain, Mouthful of vomit, Infants urine, Infants mouthful of vomit of milk, fat and meat of the dead, Milk and fat of haraam animals, Dogs saliva, Excreta and urine of haraam animals, Excreta of Halal animals, All kinds of wine.
If the body or cloth gets dirty with Najasat Khaliza more than a size of a coin then it is farz to clean it. Salah offered without cleaning will not be valid. If it is the same size of a small coin then it is wajib to clean it it is also wajib to repeat salah offered without cleaning it. If it is less than a coin then it is sunnah to clean it salah will be counted without cleaning.

Najasat Khafifa
This is minor uncleanliness and does not have strict orders. The following are examples of Najasat Khafifa:-
Urine of halal animals such as cows and sheep's, urine of a horse, Excreta of haraam birds such as crows and eagles, Gall bladder of halal animals.
If less than a quarter of a part of the body or clothing becomes dirty with Najasat Khafifa then it is allowed to offer salat without cleaning. However if it is more than quarter then it is wajib to clean before performing salaat.
Methods of cleaning Najasat
Najasat such as excreta and blood if it can be removed by washing once/twice the cloth will be clean but it is best to wash it three times. Najasat such as urine (including child's urine) should be washed three times.
Clothing contaminated with Najasat should be washed separately from those which have no Najasat. Prior to loading the machine the Najasat such as Mani and excreta should be removed.
