Wanakup; a stainless steel, double walled, easy to clean cup that comes with a reusable silicone lid. But Wanakup isn’t just a cup, it’s a system to help create change within our community, allowing cups to be returned to any participating cafe for either a refill or a refund. Our product has a continuous life cycle and has been designed with the convenience of the vendor, barista and consumer in mind. Wanakup’s refill-or-refund reusable cup system is simple and easily adaptable to consumers busy day to day lives. For cafes Wanakup will work as a service, allowing us to completely cater for the volume and frequency of cups required by each individual vendor. This cup lending system will be a viable option for a range of low to high volume cafes operating at a competitive price, compared to average spending on disposable cups. Being locally based we would be able to cater for small cafes that don’t have commercial dish washing facilities as well as closely monitor the environment, balancing cups and accounts as necessary.

Our Story
Firstly, let me introduce ourselves to you. Ben and I have just established a locally based social enterprise here in Wanaka to give our community an alternative solution to our waste problem, especially in regards to our disposable takeaway cup waste. Having lived in Wanaka for nearly 2 years now, it has become apparent that in the near future, our area will be facing a bigger waste problem than we thought. Stemming from our in-depth knowledge of Environmental & Social sciences and our extensive hospitality experience, we have been thoroughly researching the best possible solution to the 'disposable cup' waste problem. We have combined our product with a well orchestrated system that is capable of easily integrating and adapting to the needs of cafes within Wanaka & QLDC.
Now that QLDC have finally declared climate emergency, what's next and what does it mean for our local community in Wanaka? Wanaka is already an environmentally aware and proud community that we think is ready to make a change and set an example for the rest of New Zealand. This is already evident by the number of people who bring their own cups to cafes regularly and more widely by the environmentally focused businesses and initiatives that have been successful in the area. Much like how the community was able to make Wanaka plastic bag free, the community and the local council is already taking into the action to make Wanaka disposable cup free by 2022.
Wanakup; a grassroots social enterprise run by a bunch of locals keen to preserve the environment not only for the snow, trails, the lake but for the sake of our future generation. We’ve designed the perfect cup for baristas, keen brew drinkers, cafes and for the environment! We don’t believe designing and implementing an innovative product into a system needs to compromise our inconvenience or the environment.
Wanakup is a stainless steel, double walled and easy to clean cup that comes with a reusable silicone lid. Not only a product, but a system designed to help create change within our community aiming to be as easily adaptable to cafes as possible, so that it really is business like usual. With our system allowing cups to be returned to any participating cafe for either a refill or a refund of $5, we are incentivising reusable cups that still have the functionality of a disposable cup on both the consumer and distributor side.
