What is bee frass and why is it ending up on solar panels?

Bee frass is the tiny waste particles left behind by bees and other insects. In many parts of Dunedin and Otago, especially rural and semi-rural areas, it commonly appears as small yellow, brown or black spots scattered across solar panels. It is often mixed with pollen, nectar residue and dust.

While it may not look serious at first, bee frass can build up over time and create a film across the glass surface of solar panels. This reduces the amount of sunlight reaching the solar cells and can impact overall system efficiency and energy production.

Unlike rain, bee frass can stick firmly to the panel surface, especially during dry weather periods. When combined with pollen, chimney ash, dust or bird droppings, the contamination can become even harder to remove without professional cleaning.

Regular solar panel cleaning helps maintain maximum performance, improves energy generation and protects your solar investment long term.
