This water rail won the skeleton category with 98 points. It was in several pieces after arriving in Coralville, but luckily there was time to repair it at the hotel 😅
I’m lucky to be able to hone my skills every now and then at my day job at NTNU where one of my tasks is to expand our Anatomical Collection. Besides the focus on human anatomy, we also established a growing comparative anatomy collection which is great fun to work on!

Here’s the first of the three skeletons I had with me to the World Taxidermy and Fish Carving Championships 2024 in Coralville, Iowa. It’s an Eurasian nuthatch and it received 96 out of 100 points, which means a first prize. Today I want to thank my friend, colleague and fellow artist .art for taking these nice pictures, without her you and I would have to do with some badly lighted, unrecognisable pixels.
It was great fun attending the championships, I got to meet so many talented and kind people, that I just have many good memories to look back at now. I would have never gotten here without the mentorship and guidance from .fredriksson who I am proud to call my friend and teacher in the field of wildlife art. He himself did not bad by claiming the World Champion title with a taxidermy wood pigeon in the game bird category. Please check out these fine folks!

1st of June, maybe time for my first post this year? 😅 This is the result of a big project that finally got finished in 2019. It’s the huge head of a 170kg halibut that caught just outside Trondheim. The fish couldn’t be released, so every bit of it got used instead. I cleaned the head and the amount of oil that came out of the bones was quite incredible. After it was fully degreased and whitened, .osteo came over from France to articulate it. They did an amazing job and hopefully the skull will soon be on display Vitenskapsmuseet in Trondheim.

One more skeleton that got delivered to Stavanger museum last week. This golden eagle was illegally shot and confiscated by the authorities. Although it required some restoration to a couple of bones due to the hail pellets, it now has a second life at the museum. It’s truly sad how we treat wildlife and nature around us. Although a lot of good work is done all around the world, I’m quite pessimistic about the future of our natural heritage. If you follow the international news it seems to me that we have no sense at all.

A raven on an artificial rock and a weathered horn of a Norwegian wild sheep. I like simple and plain bases, but sometimes a natural addition might work, what do you prefer?

A common snipe, Gallinago gallinago, freshly caught by a hungry Eurasian sparrowhawk, Accipiter nisus. The snipe had some damage on its sternum, so it fitted nicely as a prey to the male sparrowhawk that had flown into a window.

Ruddy turnstone, Arenaria interpres. I particularly like to work with waders, most of them have an incredible lifestyle which includes long distance migration from wetland to wetland. Our need for intensive agriculture, industries depending on large quantities of water and housing in nice and accessible areas have destroyed so much wetland globally that most waders are declining around the world. Add plastic pollution, illegal hunting and the occasional oil or chemical spill and you wonder how they survive and even manage to raise their chicks.
