💧 Why is my water pump turning on all the time?
If your pump keeps cycling, even when you’re not using water, here’s what might be happening:
Most homes use a pressure tank to keep water flowing smoothly. The pump fills that tank, and a small component called a check valve (the metal piece shown in the photo) keeps water from flowing backward.
In Mérida, a common issue is our limestone-heavy water (“sarro”). Over time, buildup can cause the check valve to get stuck or stop sealing properly.
When that happens, water slowly drains back into the cistern or tinaco…
So your pump keeps turning on again and again to compensate.
Signs to watch for:
• Pump turns on constantly or very often
• It happens even when no taps are open
Quick way to check:
Turn off the valve going into your house:
• Pump stops → you may have a leak inside
• Pump keeps running → likely a faulty check valve
Why fix it?
Ignoring it can burn out your pump and increase your electricity bill.
👉 If your system is acting like this, it’s worth checking the valve before it becomes a bigger (and more expensive) problem.
