India is growing swiftly into a more urbanised nation. While urban lifestyle, with all its comforts and pleasures, is a convenient way of life, the effect it has on the environment can no longer be pushed into the background. The metropolitan city of Hyderabad alone creates over 5000 tonnes of waste every day. More than 99% of this waste i

s managed inefficiently and goes into landfills or is burnt. These escapist strategies to turn a blind eye towards the poisoning of air, water and land are an immediate threat, not only to environment and people in the vicinity, but to all living beings on this planet. Humanity is responsible for the immense damage faced by the environment, which was perfectly functional until human “civilization”. If this “ignorance is bliss” policy towards nature continues, humanity will bring about the downfall of all life on earth. But there still is a little time. “Saving the environment!” sounds like a vast and distant concept, but isn’t that difficult to work towards it, one step at a time. The most obvious step is to reduce waste products, especially those that are not biodegradable. Finding new uses for products deemed waste is one way of handling inorganic objects. Non-biodegradable materials including plastic, glass and metal, and biodegradable materials such as paper can be recycled. Organic household wastes including those from the kitchen can be composted to form fertile and nourishing soil, to return a little of what is borrowed from the Earth. After all, we do not inherit the earth from our ancestors; we borrow it from our children.
