Water Access, Sanitation & Hygiene for Urban Poor WASH-UP is an integrated intervention that seeks to increase access of the urban poor to water, sanitation and hygiene behavior change messages.

Although our project has came to an end over 2 years ago, it is remarkable that most of the interventions continue to provide the poor urban dwellers with improved access to WASH services.

2014 has been a very fruitful year for the project. We finished the year with a flourish. The over 3000 residents of Ntankoful community in Sekondi-Takoradi Metropolis now have their very own Small Town Water Supply System thanks to the generous support of the United States Agency for International Development (USAID).

The system has a 100,000 litres capacity concrete water storage tank at the highest point in the town with 6 public fetching points and additional 20,000 litres storage tanks in the Ntankoful MA School.

Official handing-over of the Small Town Water Supply System to the community is planned to take place shortly. Stay tuned.....

Global Communities, has initiated a nationwide health screening programme as part of the comprehensive strategy to stop the spread of cholera with support from the United States Agency for International Development (USAID)

In line with this, an exercise has been conducted in collaboration with the La Dade Kotopon Municipal Assembly, Ghana Health Service (GHS) and the Ministry of Local Government and Rural Development to ensure that food meant for human consumption does not produce adverse health effects.

The screening started at La, one of the badly hit districts, with initial 100 food vendors in the communities going through the exercise. Similar exercises would be held in other districts with outbreaks of the disease.

AQUATABS DISTRIBUTION IN THE ASHANTI REGION
With financial support from the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) 9,600 strips of Aquatabs (water purification tablets) distributed in the Ashanti Region; Four (districts) comprising Asante Akyem South, Asante Akyem North, Kwabre East and Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly benefited from the distribution.
In all 28 communities received the Aquatabs comprising:
6 in Asante Akyem South;
3 in Asante Akyem North;
7 in Kwabre East; and
12 in Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly

38,400 prople in 9,600 households have been supplied with strips of Aquatabs, which applied properly is expected to purify about 1,920,000 litres of drinking water. The distribution of the Aquatabs is aimed at blocking one of the routes of cholera transmission.

The distribution is currently ongoing in seven regions most affected by the cholera outbreak.

The School Latrines are coming out nicely. We are almost done with some finishing touches to be made. The latrines will provide pupils in Ntankoful and Assakae Cluster of Schools access to improved sanitation and is expected to improve school participation.

Work is progressing on the school latrines. The La R/C Basic Schools have their full complement of latrines, with the completion of works on the run-down and disused latrine. Ntankoful and Assakae have their latrines at superstructure level. We cannot wait to complete them and hand over to the schools! Stay tuned

WASH-UP is installing Latrines in La Roman Catholic School, Whindo Assakae Basic Schools and Ntankoful Cluster of Schools. The latrines are to improve sanitation access for pupils in the schools. Stay tuned.
