I have been seeing some pretty worrying things being posted online regarding the construction of steel buildings, so felt it was necessary to write something on the topic, so here goes:
Why Proper Engineering, Detailing and Certified Fabrication Matter in UK Structural Steel
In the UK, structural steel must be designed, detailed and fabricated in full compliance with BS EN 1090 and the Construction Products Regulations. This makes proper engineering and certified fabrication not just best practice, but a legal requirement.
Structural design must be carried out by a qualified structural engineer—not the fabricator—to ensure the structure is safe and performs as intended. Fabrication must then be completed by an approved company working to the correct Ex*****on Class (EXC), with certified welding, controlled materials and full traceability. Anything produced outside these requirements cannot legally be placed on the market.
It’s also important to note that agricultural buildings are not exempt from these requirements. Though planning rules may be more relaxed, the structural safety of farm buildings is governed by the same legislation as any other permanent structure. If it uses structural steel, it must comply with EN 1090 and building safety laws. Cutting corners risks structural failure, invalidated insurance, and legal consequences.
Countless industry cases illustrate what can go wrong when proper engineering and certified fabrication are ignored—see these examples:

Individuals should not attempt to fabricate structural steelwork themselves unless they hold the proper qualifications and EN 1090 certification. Poor fabrication presents serious safety hazards and breaches UK law.
For peace of mind, reputable and compliant suppliers and contractors can be found through RIDBA:

HED Solutions can provide some or all elements of the steel design package, or you may seek guidance from other RIDBA members—many of whom we partner with on projects.
Proper engineering, accurate detailing and certified EXC fabrication protect the project—and the public.
