Hi everyone,
As you may be aware, one of my employees is deaf and in order to improve my British Sign Language (BSL) I have been introduced to the amazing Claire Cummings of Horsell Village Scrubbers. Claire does a huge amount of work in the local community to raise deaf awareness and below are a couple of events that Claire is organising that I wanted to share with you.
Thanks,
Mark
The last year has seen growing awareness and acceptance of BSL. We had the first ever profoundly deaf competitor (and winner) on Strictly Come Dancing. We saw Troy Kotsur win the Best Supporting Actor Oscar and the BSL Act received Royal Assent this April.
What a year! On the back of these successes, more and more people are embracing BSL and are keen to work with, and widen participation by deaf people.
BSL Celebration was set up to ‘seize the moment’ and to continue building on this acceptance and awareness so that more and more deaf people participate equally in society.
We will be organising different events across the UK, and Woking BSL Fest is the first of these. It will showcase and celebrate BSL with the public through a programme of staged events, interactive information and stalls in Jubilee Square, Woking on Saturday 15th October 2022.
BSL Celebration are raising funds to cover the cost of hiring a stage, PA system and large screen to stage the event. A quiz night is being held at Horsell Scouts HQ at 7.30pm on Saturday 9 July to raise funds for the event. Tickets are £10 per person with tables of up to 10 people. Email [email protected] for tickets.
If you are able to support us by donating items for a raffle, making a donation towards the costs, we would really appreciate it. Please contact Claire Cummings on [email protected] for more information.
We also have 2 free talks on the Horsell Scrubbers memory banner at the Lightbox. Join Claire on a journey down the scrubbers' memory banner. This is an inclusive tour, delivered in BSL with spoken English voice-over.
Dates: Saturday 11th June at 11am and Friday 17th June at 2.30pm
For tickets: [email protected].
Venue: The Lightbox, Chobham Road, Woking, Surrey, GU21 4AA.
Thank you very much for your support.
