Tom's Repairs & Model Railways I offer servicing & repairs of model railway locomotives in OO Gauge & N Gauge. I also offer DCC decoder fitting. e.g.

I have been repairing model locomotives professionally for 3 years now for my local model shop and now I'm looking to expand my services. Here is a overview of what services i offer.

-Locomotive Cleaning. body, wheels, motors, gears, bearings.

-Locomotive lubrication. motors, gears, bearings.

-Fitting replacement parts (either you supple the part or i can help source a new part).

-Detail part

-Rewiring.

-DCC decoder fitting and hard wiring fitting, including older Bachmann split chassis locomotives.

-CV Decoder Programing.

-Fabrication and reconstruction for broken older Tri-ang locomotive bodies.

Hornby hogwarts castle I've never been given one to repair before.

This came to me with the description of not running and emitting smoke.

First was the smell. That burnt out electronics smell, it was very strong.

Upon inspection it was clear this was bad.
Melted gear, missing tooth from drive axle gear and the motor........ I think the pictures speak for this one.

I was very hard pressed to find spare parts online.

All i could find was a replacement chassis for £79.00, thats never going to happen.

I was going to write is on off untill it found a replacement motor at a locol swap meet of mine.

The drive axle gear was a luck case I needed a 26 Tooth gear, Intel my spares collection i had a gear the same size but 28 Tooth but the center hole was to small.
After widening the hole with the file its a good fit and the gears mesh up perfectly.

I can safely say this loco has been saved.

Triang/Hornby Stephenson rocket. Another motor that been over oiled, but that's not the only reason this loco didn't work right.

The small spring clip that holds the brushes has become short for whatever reason.

Due the the rarely of this motor I've made and new one from scratch.

Working on something a little special this time round. A triang/hornby Stephens Rocket a non runner at the moment.

Top tip for lima diesel locos. This Lima 121 sent to me as a non runner. Motor runs fine applying power direct to the motor.

Either the wheel sets where put in back to front or the bogie has spun around 180°

Turning bogie 180°, works a treat now.

Hopefully this will help someone out.

The jinty also another non runner now working. The issue was down to no lubrication oil. Also being fitted with a obsole...

The jinty also another non runner now working. The issue was down to no lubrication oil. Also being fitted with a obsolete hornby zero 1 decoder didn't help as its not compatible with any modern DCC Controller. Converted back to DC running.

Next up the Hornby jinty. After removing the zero 1 decoder, I tested the loco for life. It dose run but from the sound it's making the oil has dried up.

Started off a non runner/poor runner. Now running smoother than expected. It always worth try to revive a loco, regardless of condition. I could just surprise you. Really happy to of got this back on track (pun well and truly intended 😁).

The Green 08 shunter in pieces, its been over oiled and has gotten everything covered. Also is in need of a good clean.

Apologies it's been a while since I've posted any loco repairs. Had a few things going on in life as you do 😅.

Been given these two for repairs. Been told these are non runners. The jinty appears to have what look's like (to me) a decoder of some sort, possibly a zero one. What ever it is exactly it's no longer required, so it will be removed.
