He is such a generous man and a real animal lover. TV presenter Kirsty Gallacher is calling for Ricky Gervais to be awarded a knighthood after sharing a list of 22 animal charities set to benefit from the donation. Posting on Instagram, she described the gesture as deserving of national recognition, adding that it reflected the feelings of a country full of animal lovers.
Fans quickly echoed her comments, with many saying the donation spoke for people who care deeply about animal welfare but are unable to give financially themselves. Several suggested that the comedian’s long-standing support for animals, combined with the scale of the donation, made him worthy of the title “Sir Ricky”.
Gervais, 64, said the donation was made to “celebrate the spirit of Christmas”. Writing on social media, he shared the list of charities and joked that while he could have spent the money on luxury purchases, he felt this was a better use of it. He also referenced his late mother, recalling her advice that “you can’t take it with you”.
The comedian has a history of generous giving, having donated £1.9 million to charity following a previous tour in 2023. His latest contribution includes support for organisations working with injured, disabled and stray animals, as well as charities operating in some of the world’s most challenging environments.
Among the recipients is Flori’s Friends Rescue, which provides wheelchairs for paralysed dogs. Founder Natalia George said the donation would make a significant difference to animals with spinal injuries and praised Gervais for supporting specialist work. Safe Haven for Donkeys, which works in Gaza and the West Bank, said the funding would help sustain urgent veterinary care, while Nowzad, which operates in Afghanistan and Ukraine, also expressed gratitude for the support.
Gervais has long been vocal about animal welfare, and this latest donation has further strengthened his reputation as one of the entertainment industry’s most committed advocates for animal charities.
The donation has also renewed discussion around the role of public honours in recognising charitable work. Supporters argue that Gervais’s consistency and scale of giving set him apart from one-off celebrity gestures.
Others have pointed out that his advocacy has helped bring wider attention to smaller animal charities that often struggle for visibility.
Many people would likely agree with Kirsty that Ricky Gervais is deserving of a knighthood — but would he accept it?
