Today, Corner House welcomes it's first guests of the year. We wish them a happy holiday. And everything is ready for them! All the work on the beck at the back is done, and the village green has a pristine new lawn. Holiday Home Yorkshire has carried out a Spring clean, Ged has cleaned the carpets and Paul has cleaned the windows. We still have a few weeks available to let but they are going fast. And you can see why. Who wouldn't want to wake up to a view like this? Sunrise, and the church clock glows in the first light of the day.

Many years ago now, the website for Corner House was designed by Charlie and Emma Ellis of Luzmedia, and Charlie has managed it for us ever since. Everybody tells us it's a lovely website, and we think so too. Charlie has been a superb manager, always ready to tinker under the bonnet ( his phrase ) at a moment's notice to fix the smallest problem.

Now Emma and Charlie are retiring. We shall miss them, but we wish them a happy retirement.

So, we have had to construct a new website. We have chosen a "DIY" website, and Nigel produced it himself with some help from Charlie, and some interference from Paula! We have kept it as much like the old site as possible, and it's up and running now with unchanged addresses for the website and the emails.

Do have a look before lockdown ends and we're all rushed off our feet again! Any feedback from friends and clients past, present and future will be welcome.

And book your holiday soon! We still have a couple of weeks available in May. And May in Swaledale is wonderful!.

It's been a lovely sunny day in Grinton today, so we took the opportunity to take a photo of the village green which is beside Corner House. Reeth, the village about a mile away, is said to have the largest village green in England, so we think that Grinton's must be the smallest! It has been re- turfed, as part of the repairs to the wall of the beck behind the house, which was damaged in the dreadful storm that took place in July 2019. We are so pleased to have everything back as it should be.The team of builders who did the restoration have done a brilliant job, and they were always nice to have around. We are very grateful to them. But Corner House is now back to normal, and we are looking forward to the end of lockdown and the start of a new season.

We are busy getting ready for re-opening on 12th April, and we're really looking forward to adding the third bedroom to the accommodation offered at Corner House. Looking back through our earlier posts I realise that we had announced it's availability prematurely last year. Unfortunately, the many rules regarding Covid safety meant that we needed the room for storage, and we had to lock it up again. But we are happy to say that it will be available as soon as we re-open this year. It's a lovely big room at the back of the house overlooking the beck. Like the bathroom, it has a few steps down to it, but there is a stout handrail.
We have only increased the capacity of the house to 5, because the rest of the accommodation hasn't changed. But the sleeping arrangements are now more flexible. For example, a party of 2 couples can now choose to have a double bed each. A family of 4 can choose to have separate rooms for each of the children. A fifth person could perhaps join the party; or a party of 3 could have a bedroom each. We leave it to you!
Though not endless, the possibilities are certainly much more numerous than they were.

If you are as tired as we are of being locked down, you will be happy to see some light at the end of the tunnel. All being well, we shall be open for business again from 12 April 2021. Fingers are being kept tightly crossed! We'll post some news and photographs between now and then to keep you up to date with what has been happening at Corner House, but meanwhile, do have a look at the website and our availability and get in touch if you feel like a holiday!

Since emerging from lockdown, we have made a few changes at Corner House. We had already decided to make it available all year round, but of course our plans were thwarted by the virus. Now, you can book a holiday at any time, including Christmas and the New Year.
We used the weeks of lockdown to decorate and furnish the third bedroom of the house. The accommodation is now considerably more flexible. The rest of the house hasn't changed, so we have decided to limit the number of people staying to 5, to make sure everyone is comfortable.
The house has a king-size bed in Bedroom 1, twin beds in Bedroom 2 and a double bed in Bedroom 3. So you will have more choice when you decide where to sleep, as well as bringing an extra person if you wish. The photos show the new bedroom, which is at the back of the house.
All the information you need, including our prices and availability, is on our website.

26/05/2020

We're all looking forward to things becoming a little more normal. If a change of scenery and a holiday is on your mind, then you might like to know that Corner House will be available again from July 4. Many weeks are already taken by people who had to delay their holiday because of the lockdown. So don't wait too long before booking!

Tour de Yorkshire - 2 to 5 May 19

Ever since July 2014, when the Tour de France started in Yorkshire (and incidentally passed through Grinton on Day 1), the County has really taken competitive road racing to it's heart. There has been a Tour de Yorkshire every year since. This year’s event will take place from 2nd to 5th May. On 3rd May, the race will be starting in Barnsley and ending with a sprint finish in Bedale, just 25 minutes down the road from Corner House. The cottage is available for renting at that time, if anyone requires a pied-a terre to attend the cycle race. It could be your week!

2019 will become even more exciting for enthusiasts, with the World Road Cycling Championships also taking place in Yorkshire, from 21 to 28 September. One of the races, on the 26th, will pass right past the front door of Corner House and on up the now ‘notorious’ Cote de Grinton’ towards Leyburn. There will be other opportunities during the week to watch various championship races taking place nearby.

Spring is coming and we’re sprucing up Corner House for the new letting season, inside and out.

Over the winter months Swaledale’s own painter and decorator, Jeremy Moon, has been working his magic in the cottage. Three rooms are already done and what’s left is scheduled for the early autumn.

Outside, the ageing wooden tubs and conifers beside the front door have been replaced with ceramic pots, each with a holly bush. To our surprise, when discussing the gender of the plants at the garden centre, we were advised that our two purchases were female and, if we wanted to have red berries appearing on them, they would need a male companion if there were to be a possibility of pollenation! Heeding this advice, we have planted a male holly in a pot nearby, and we will look forward to finding out if pollenation prospers!

…… and we have added a bench to the side of the front garden, as a place to sit and relax outdoors when the weather permits.

…… and as the new 2019 season gets underway, we have decided for the first time to extend the availability of the cottage for holiday letting throughout the autumn and winter months into 2020. Our website for the cottage (www.holiday-cottage-in-swaledale.com) reflects this, and we hope there will be plenty of visitors wishing to come and stay and take advantage of the wonderful walks, and other leisure opportunities, that are available right from the front door. Whether you are a rambler, a walker, or a biker, or if you just want to relax and chill out, you will not be disappointed with either the cottage or the location.

The " beast from the east " has been relatively kind to Corner House, even though there has been more snow than we have seen since we came to live in Swaledale nearly 25 years ago. The fact that it is dry, powdery snow makes it easy to shift and we could dig our car out.( It's a good thing we're not into making snowmen!) The roads have been kept clear, but we have mostly stayed at home. The house has been wonderfully warm and cosy and the outlook very picturesque. Apparently the River Swale is partially frozen (we haven't looked!) And our wonderful local GP camped out in the surgery all week,to be sure of being available for the patients! We'll be glad when the snow is gone!
