🏆 Prestigious Award for Craftsmanship on Drogheda’s Historic Tholsel Building! 🕰️

Louth County Council is delighted to share that M&I Lead Contractors Ltd, based in Balbriggan, Co. Dublin, have been named the winners of the 2025 Murdoch Award by the Lead Contractors Association (LCA) in the UK.

This honour recognises their exceptional craftsmanship in the leadwork completed in 2024 as part of the restoration of the Tholsel’s iconic clock tower — a landmark first erected in 1770 and the heart of Drogheda’s civic life for over 130 years.

The roof restoration project was expertly led by James Oliver Hearty & Sons Ltd of Co. Armagh, whose dedication to heritage conservation and exceptional project management ensured the successful preservation of this 18th-century structure.

Cllr Seán Kelly, Cathaoirleach of Louth County Council, said: “Everyone at Louth County Council extends our warm congratulations to M&I Lead Contractors Ltd on this outstanding achievement, and also commends James Oliver Hearty & Sons Ltd for their role in delivering a project of such high quality. The Murdoch Award is fitting recognition for the quality work that went into reestablishing such a historic building.”

👏 Congratulations to James Oliver Hearty & Sons Ltd and M&I Lead Contractors Ltd on this remarkable achievement!

Exciting News for Easky Abbey in Sligo!

The Heritage Office, Sligo County Council has confirmed that conservation works will begin at Easky Abbey on Monday 11th October 2021 for a duration of 5 weeks (subject to weather).

The works are being undertaken by Sligo County Council in partnership with the local community and are funded by Sligo County Council, The Heritage Council and the Department of Housing, Local Government and Heritage and the National Monuments Service - through the Community Monuments Fund 2021 .

The works in Phase 1 will include ivy removal and the conservation of the west gable and south wall of the abbey. All works are being supervised by Dedalus Architecture and will be archaeologically monitored. The main contractor is James Oliver Hearty & Sons.

A survey of Easky Graveyard by Sam Moore and Ciarán Davis was commissioned by LEAP in 2016 and prepared the ground for the current project. In 2020, the Heritage Office, Sligo County Council secured funding from The Heritage Council to prepare a conservation report for Easky Abbey to guide the project forward and to secure funding for conservation works.

We look forward to keeping you posted as the work progresses on conserving such a unique aspect of Easkey's heritage for the benefit of the whole community.

Please note that there will be no public access to the Abbey or graveyard while works are ongoing. If access is required to visit graves during the works please contact Siobhán Ryan, Heritage Officer, Sligo County Council at 087- 6544222. Thank you.
