Another reminder that rats don’t just “appear” in buildings.

These ones were entering directly from the drainage system after a missing air admittance valve left open access from the sewer into the store room cavity.

Treatment alone would never solve this properly without identifying the actual ingress point. CCTV drainage inspections and thorough proofing remain one of the most important parts of long-term rat control.

We’re looking for a Trainee Pest Control Technician to join the team at Pest Shield.

No experience needed, full training provided.

This is a hands-on role working across homes and businesses throughout the North East dealing with rodents, insects, proofing work and more. No two days are the same.

What we offer:

• RSPH Level 2 qualification paid for

Pay:

• National Minimum Wage during training
• £27,000–£30,000+ once trained and qualified

We’re looking for someone who is:

• Reliable and hard working
• Practical and hands-on
• Good with customers
• Keen to learn a proper trade
• Comfortable working independently and outdoors

Essential requirements:

• Full UK driving licence
• Must be able to pass an Enhanced DBS check due to the nature of the environments we work in, including schools and vulnerable people’s homes

This is not an office job and not suited to someone looking for an easy ride — but for the right person it’s a solid long-term career in a growing industry.

A queen wasp starts all of this completely alone.

This tiny paper nest is the very beginning of what could eventually become a colony containing thousands of wasps later in the summer. Every layer is made from weathered wood fibres chewed up and mixed with saliva to create this paper-like material.

At this stage there may only be a few developing larvae inside, but once worker wasps emerge the nest can expand extremely quickly.

This is why early-season wasp activity inside lofts, garages and roof spaces should never be ignored.

Bed bugs don’t just stay on mattresses.

This bed frame was heavily harbouring activity deep within the timber joints and screw points — exactly the sort of place they thrive once an infestation becomes established.

The black spotting visible here is classic bed bug faecal spotting and a strong indicator of ongoing activity.

One of the biggest mistakes we see is people repeatedly spraying aerosols around the room while never checking the actual harbourage points. Bed bugs love tight cracks, joints, headboards and bed frames far more than open surfaces.

Inspection-led treatments are absolutely critical if you want proper control rather than temporary knockdown.

Ant gel treatment being applied directly to an active nest entrance today. Rather than spraying large areas, specialist ant gel is placed exactly where the ants are feeding and travelling. Worker ants carry the treatment back into the nest, allowing it to spread through the colony and target the source of the infestation rather than just the ants you can see.

This started as a single queen building a nest no bigger than a golf ball. Within weeks, it can develop into a colony of thousands.

Got called out to a mouse problem in a garden storage box.

Turned up and found two little field mice just using it as a shelter.

No need for traps or poison on this one – caught them and released them back out into a field away from the property.

Not every job needs bait. Sometimes it’s just about dealing with it properly.
