Festina lente is a classical Latin oxymoron meaning "make haste slowly" (sometimes translated as "more haste, less speed" or "hurry slowly").
Core Meaning
• The Concept: It advises a careful balance between urgency and caution. You should accomplish tasks efficiently and purposefully, but without the recklessness that leads to costly mistakes and requires redoing the work.
• The Paradox: As an oxymoron, it combines two opposing commands—festina (make haste) and lente (slowly)—to teach that deliberate, thoughtful action is ultimately faster than rushed, careless ex*****on.
History and Symbolism
• Roman Emperors: The phrase was a favorite motto of the Roman Emperor Augustus, who believed that rashness was a dangerous trait for military commanders and leaders.
• The Dolphin and Anchor: The classic visual symbol for the phrase is a dolphin entwined around an anchor. The dolphin represents speed and agility (haste), while the anchor represents stability and deliberation (slowly). Renaissance publisher Aldus Manutius famously used this emblem as his printer's mark.

I did a little trip down to Chiddingfold a couple weeks ago for Elliott’s Coffee Shop, Surrey new shopfront. The lettering is very much inspired by the signs I saw during my recent trip to Rouen, France.

What a day it was, the sun was out all day and I met every dog in the village, shame they brought their owners along... 🤷🏻‍♂️
Thanks to Louise and crew for trusting my brushes and for keeping me plied with food and coffee all day long. Good times were had!
