🏠🐀 5 SIMPLE WAYS TO PEST-PROOF YOUR HOME

One of the questions we’re regularly asked is: “How can I stop pests getting into my home in the first place?”

The truth is, there’s no way to guarantee you’ll never have a pest problem, but a few simple precautions can significantly reduce the chances of rats, mice and insects deciding to move in.

🔎 1. CHECK FOR POSSIBLE ENTRY POINTS
Rats and mice can exploit surprisingly small openings around buildings. Check around pipework, damaged air bricks, doors, vents and other service penetrations. Remember, though, that not every hole should simply be sealed—particularly where rodents are already active. Finding out how and why they’re getting in should come first.

🍞 2. REMOVE EASY FOOD SOURCES
Keep food in sealed containers, clean up spillages and avoid leaving pet food accessible overnight. Outside, pay particular attention to bird feeders, chicken feed, composting and poorly secured bins. A reliable food source can encourage rodents to remain in an area.

🧹 3. REDUCE CLUTTER
Pests love somewhere quiet and undisturbed. Excessive clutter can provide harbourage and make the early signs of an infestation much harder to spot.

🌳 4. DON’T FORGET OUTSIDE
Overgrown vegetation, accumulated rubbish and materials stored against buildings can all provide shelter. Keep an eye on drainage too—persistent rat activity inside a property can sometimes be associated with defects within the drainage system, so simply putting down bait may not solve the underlying problem.

👀 5. KNOW THE WARNING SIGNS
Droppings, gnaw marks, scratching noises, damaged food packaging, unusual smells or repeated pest sightings shouldn’t be ignored.

Catching a problem early can make it considerably easier to investigate and control.

⚠️ And one important piece of advice…

If you’ve got an active rodent infestation, don’t immediately start filling every hole you can find. Sealing an active entry point without understanding the infestation can potentially trap rodents inside the building or cause them to find another route.

A professional pest inspection isn’t just about killing what’s there. It’s about working out what the pest is, where it’s coming from, why it’s there and what can be done to reduce the chances of it happening again.

That’s exactly what we do at Perish-A-Pest Pest Control.

🐝 ASIAN HORNET OR EUROPEAN HORNET? BEFORE YOU PANIC… READ THIS!

We’ve had quite a few messages recently from people convinced they’ve found an Asian Hornet. Thankfully, the vast majority turn out to be our native European Hornet.

As pest control professionals, we completely understand why people are concerned, but correctly identifying the species is important.

🔍 European Hornets are larger, have a reddish-brown head and thorax, and a bright yellow abdomen with black markings.

⚫ Asian Hornets are usually smaller, much darker overall, have an orange face, a single orange band towards the rear of the abdomen and distinctive yellow leg tips.

⚠️ If you genuinely believe you’ve found an Asian Hornet, don’t disturb the nest or attempt to treat it yourself. Take a clear photograph if it’s safe to do so and report the sighting through the official government reporting system.

If it’s a European Hornet and the nest is causing a problem around your home or business, we’re fully equipped to deal with it safely and professionally.

Not every large wasp is an Asian Hornet, and not every hornet nest needs the same response.

📸 Unsure what you’ve found?

Send us a clear photo via Facebook or WhatsApp before booking. We’re always happy to identify it for you and give honest advice—saving you unnecessary worry and ensuring the right action is taken.

🪙 SILVERFISH PREVENTION TIPS 🪙

We are getting a lot of calls for silverfish. Here’s some tips to save you money.

Silverfish are becoming increasingly common in homes across Cornwall, particularly in bathrooms, kitchens, airing cupboards and other humid areas.

The good news is that prevention is usually far easier than treatment.

A few simple steps can make your property far less attractive to silverfish:

✔ Keep humidity levels low by using extractor fans and opening windows where possible.

✔ Repair leaking pipes, taps and overflows promptly.

✔ Wipe away condensation from windows and other surfaces.

✔ Vacuum regularly, paying particular attention to skirting boards, corners and behind furniture.

✔ Avoid storing excessive amounts of cardboard, newspapers and paperwork in damp areas.

✔ Store clothing, bedding and important documents in dry conditions.

✔ Seal gaps around pipework and service entries where practical.

✔ Investigate any signs of dampness before they become a larger problem.

Many people don’t realise that silverfish feed on dust, paper, cardboard, wallpaper paste and other organic materials commonly found around the home.

By reducing moisture and removing food sources, most properties can remain silverfish-free without the need for chemical treatments.

As always, prevention is better than cure.

🐝 WASP SEASON IS HERE 🐝

Every year we see people trying to block nest entrances, spray nests with shop-bought products, or poke them with sticks.

Unfortunately, that usually ends with angry wasps and painful stings.

If you’ve noticed wasps repeatedly entering the same hole in a wall, roof, shed or garden structure, there’s a good chance a nest is developing nearby.

The earlier a nest is treated, the easier and safer it usually is to deal with.

Stay safe and enjoy the summer.

📢 IMPORTANT CUSTOMER UPDATE FROM PERISH-A-PEST

Firstly, we’d like to thank every customer who has supported Perish-A-Pest over the years. Whether we’ve helped with a wasp nest, resolved a rodent problem, protected your business through a pest management contract, or simply provided advice when you needed it, your support is genuinely appreciated.

As many people are aware, the cost of running a business continues to rise. Fuel, vehicle maintenance, insurance, treatment products, equipment, training, compliance requirements, waste disposal, professional memberships and general operating costs have all increased significantly in recent years.

For a long time, we have absorbed as much of these increases as possible. However, to ensure we can continue providing the high level of service our customers deserve, we will be making some small adjustments to our pricing structure.

We want to reassure customers that these are modest increases and not major changes. Our aim is simply to keep pace with rising costs while continuing to invest in the quality, professionalism and reliability of the service we provide.

What won’t change is our commitment to delivering honest advice, professional service and effective pest control solutions.

In fact, whilst operating costs have increased, we have continued to invest heavily in improving the business, our knowledge and the service we provide.

Over the years, Perish-A-Pest has continued to develop by investing in:

✅ Ongoing professional training and industry development.

✅ Improved treatment methods and monitoring systems.

✅ Enhanced reporting, record keeping and customer communication.

✅ Better equipment and service standards.

✅ Improved customer aftercare and support.

✅ Continued investment in compliance, safety and professional development.

✅ Supporting local organisations and community initiatives.

We are proud to be:

⭐ Cornwall Trading Standards Approved

⭐ DBS Checked

⭐ Fully Insured

⭐ Professionally Trained in Pest Management

⭐ Supporters of Cornwall Pride’s Safer Spaces Scheme

⭐ Sponsors of Local Grassroots Sport

⭐ Committed to Continuous Professional Development

Being a professional pest control company involves far more than simply turning up and putting down bait. It requires ongoing training, investment, insurance, compliance, record keeping, safe working practices and keeping up to date with changing legislation and industry best practice.

We have always believed that if customers are paying for a service, they deserve a company that is constantly improving rather than standing still.

Our goal has never been to be the cheapest pest control company in Cornwall.

Our goal is to provide a professional, reliable and trustworthy service that delivers genuine value, honest advice and long-term solutions.

Unlike many larger national companies, when you contact Perish-A-Pest, you deal directly with the person carrying out the work. There are no call centres, no sales teams, no subcontractors and no being passed from department to department.

Just honest, local pest control from someone who genuinely cares about solving the problem properly.

These small pricing adjustments will allow us to continue investing in the business, improving our services and maintaining the standards our customers have come to expect from Perish-A-Pest.

We appreciate that nobody likes price increases, least of all us, and this decision has not been taken lightly. However, we firmly believe that continuing to improve our service, knowledge and professionalism provides the best possible value for our customers.

Thank you for your continued support, recommendations, reviews and trust.

It is a privilege to serve homes and businesses across Cornwall, and we look forward to continuing to do so for many years to come.

⚠️ Rats, Mice & Insects Don’t Just Damage Property… They Can Damage Your Health Too ⚠️

At Perish-A-Pest, we believe pest control isn’t just about getting rid of unwanted visitors — it’s about protecting you, your family, your staff and your customers from the very real health risks pests can bring into homes and businesses.

🐀 Rodents such as rats and mice can spread dangerous diseases through their urine, droppings, saliva and nesting materials. One disease people may have heard of is Hantavirus which has been in the news a lot recently, which can be contracted by breathing in contaminated dust from rodent waste. While rare in the UK, it highlights just how important proper cleaning and professional pest control really are.

Other illnesses linked to rodents can include:
• Leptospirosis (Weil’s Disease)
• Salmonella
• E. coli contamination
• Rat Bite Fever
• Toxoplasmosis

🪳 Cockroaches and insects can also spread bacteria and contaminate food preparation areas, while fleas, mites and bed bugs can cause irritation, allergic reactions and sleepless nights.

⚠️ NEVER vacuum or sweep large amounts of rodent droppings dry, as this can release harmful particles into the air. Always wear gloves, ventilate the area and use proper disinfectants — or better still, call a professional.

Signs you may have a problem:
✔️ Droppings
✔️ Scratching noises in walls or lofts
✔️ Gnaw marks
✔️ Grease marks along skirting boards
✔️ Unpleasant odours
✔️ Insect sightings, especially at night

At Perish-A-Pest, we provide professional, discreet and effective pest control across Cornwall, helping keep homes and businesses safe from rodents, insects and the diseases they can carry.

If you’re unsure whether you have an issue, don’t ignore the warning signs — early action can prevent a small problem becoming a serious infestation.
